Those 3 year dates are just inspection/suggestion dates. I want to know of it was stored in a cool environment or in a hot environment. You will know if it is bad when you open up the entree. The smell of MREs gone bad (irrelevant of date) are quite noticable.

I still have a few circa late 90s early 2000's MREs in my freezer. 4 fingers of death and ham slice. I had a meatloaf a few years ago and it was ok.

I have eaten 1st gen MREs (dark brown package) over 10 years past the date.

Inspect the food packages. Are they bloated? If yes, toss it

Open the package. Does it smell like death? Does it look like road kill? If yes, toss it.

Take the smallest of a sample, let it sit in your tongue for several minutes. Does it burn it taste like ****? If yes, toss it.

If it passes the last test, eat one bite. Wait 15 my minutes minimum. How does your stomach feel? Does it feels like you may vomit or crap like Joe Biden after taco Tuesday? If yes, toss it.

If after all that, you're good, it's good.

**The above means it is good, within the statistical average of +/- 3.5%. However, I am not a survival expert, not have I recently stayed at a Holiday In Express, so good luck

Expiration dates are a liability thing that the manufacturer puts on their product. It's not that the product goes bad it is that after the expiration date the manufacturer is no longer legally liable for the product. Very important regarding recalls. Eat the MRE's and they didn't go bad!

You’ll probably be fine. This guy routinely reviews and eats expired MREs.

Meals Refused by Ethiopians?? They've never been edible. You've survived so far...

I wanted to vote for “yes, go for it, you’re going to die”.

I've often eaten MREs several YEARS after exp date. Like my extra meds they were stored in a cool, dry area without big fluctuations in temp or humidity.
Expired meds in the US are shipped to 3rd world countries. They’re suggestions and a way to produce new ones and keep the machine operating.

On of my son in law’s, still currently serving, has boxes of them and always looking for an excuse to pass them around. No many sit around long enough for them to go past date. Kids are getting older and most will still eat them…

The expiration date is not a real expiration. At the expiration date, they are due to be inspected by a military food service inspector and if they pass they are still good to go.

Yeah, or Nay?
I didn't know MRE's had expiration dates. That just shows how our military has gone soft.

We didn't have MRE's back in the late 60's early1970's and I one assignment where we had field rations and they were K-rats that they said was from the Korean War but they might have been left over from WW1 or 2.

I didn't get the runs or have a stomach ache after eating them but that was the only time I ever ate them.
