I'm 6'0" and 245 lbs.
I've carried a Glock 19 for a couple of decades, usually in a IWB holster at 4-4:30 o'clock. Currently I'm using a JM Custom Kydex "Tom Givens" holster (which is essentially the "IWB 3" holster with a 20-degree cant). Prior to the JMCK holster I carried it in a Milt Sparks "Executive's Companion" IWB holster.
I also carry the G19 AIWB when the IWB doesn't conceal well with my clothing. I've tried several different AIWB holster setups in attempt to find something comfortable:
- Tenicor "VELO 4"
- Keepers Concealment "The Cornerstone"
- Keepers Concealment "The Keeper"
- JMCK "Wing Claw 2.5"
I finally settled on the JMCK Wing Claw 2.5, with a Mastermind Tactics "Specialist Pro" AIWB belt, and Mastermind Tactics AIWB pillow.
I've learned that AIWB gear is 180-degrees opposite of what you'd use for OWB and IWB. For example:
- A larger pistol is easier to carry and conceal.
- A flexible belt is better than a heavy rigid belt, because the flexible belt flows around the holster contours, minimizing bulk, and allows it to flex with your body.
- An AIWB holster that's molded to accommodate a WML is more comfortable because it has more surface area which minimizes "hotspots". The downside is the WML feature is what retains the gun in the holster - so you have to have a light on the pistol.
- You need pants that fit correctly in the waist because the pants help carry and distribute the load of the pistol. If the waist is too loose then you'll have problems with how your pants "carry" the gun.
The Mastermind Tactics "pillow" is much more comfortable than a foam wedge. The pillow is attached onto the muzzle end of the AIWB holster and rides against your groin to push the grip of the pistol into your abdomen.
So... if you're thinking about AIWB carry then expect to do some trial and error to find the equipment that works best for you. I nearly gave up until I tried the Wing Claw 2.5.
Finally, sometimes I'll carry the G19 in a JMCK "OWB 1" holster at 3:00 o'clock when I'm wearing a light jacket to conceal it.
