Coffee Jitters

My wife and I have been retired for sometime now. Having coffee is a big part of our morning ritual.

If I drink 2 cups of regular coffee, I get a significant case of the jitters. About the only thing I can do as far as firearms is to do dry firing fairly late at night. Going to the range after the 2 cups of coffee would be a huge waste of ammo and time.

Anyone else have this issue? Don

Also retired. “Sort of.” Just busy with other activities.
One cup in the morning. And one around 5pm. Post afternoon nap.
If it seems too strong I put less grounds into my Bialetti Espresso Percolator. Still a nice caffeine stimulation. But no jitters. Best of luck in sorting out your individual situation.

I drink 2-3 large cups a day and it doesn't cause a tremor anymore.

Caffeine's half-life is about 5 hours in healthy people. On shooting days cut back to one cup and then go shooting 6 hours later.

However, you have to ask yourself, if these jitters are routine after drinking two cups then what harm are you doing to yourself?

I live by a simple rule now that I'm old and that is "Don't do that!" when contemplating things that are bad for my health, and it sounds like two cups a day is bad for your health. Maybe you should cut back to one cup of caffeinated coffee daily and drink a second cup of decaf.

I seriously doubt that the coffee causes any harm, just means I don't do things requiring fine motor control. Don

I can drink a 20 Ounce Red Bull and go to sleep. Dunno what to tell you here.

^^ Good advice... ^^

Don, how do you brew your coffee? Try mixing your regular coffee with decaf beans before brewing. This way, you can still enjoy your morning coffee routine with your wife but drink less of the jitter-inducing caffeine. You could even tweak the mixture to include >50% decaf beans to cut your caffeine intake even more, while still getting your morning coffee fix.

I have 1 cup first thing, and that's it for the day. It doesn't give me jitters, but maybe makes me a bit emotionally jumpy and reactive. That's not a good space to be in for shooting. It wears off in an hour or two.

For me, the big physical negative with coffee is vasoconstriction. That's very bad for strength sports. For shooting, it makes my hands cold and insensitive due to the poor circulation. That also wears off in 2 hours or so.

Outside of matches or other formal situations, I shoot almost exclusively in the afternoon. So the coffee is really never a problem.
