CC accidental mag release when sitting

I have a gen4 glock 30 and an IWB crossbreed holster. I carried it for the first time tonight and after getting out of my truck I noticed that the mag was loose. So I started messing around with what could have happened. I noticed that whenever I sit down the gun pushes toward my body and the magazine release button is hit. I carry at the five o'clock position and I found that if I push the handle/grip of the gun toward my body with any amount of force it pretty consistently hits the magazine release button. I absolutely love this gun but if this is a gen4 issue, especially one that's not fixable, then it's a deal breaker for me and I'm looking for a new gun or maybe a new holster.

Does anybody else have this problem?
How do I stop this from happening?
Are there smaller magazine release buttons or at least shallower ones?

I've never had this issue with my gen 4 glocks and crossbreed holsters. Are you overweight? Maybe that would cause the problem. I'm wearing a glock 19 in a crossbreed right now and I can't get the mag to accidentally release even when trying to make it happen. I'm curious to hear more on this, whether or not this is common, because I've never heard of it happening before.

What position do you carry your CCW in?

No I'm not overweight. I'm actually pretty skinny but I work out so I'm not all skin and bones.

Also, when looking at the holster there is a little indentation where the magazine release is being pushed into the holster leather. I may just take a dremel and shave that part off. But it's still disturbing knowing that if I truly need my gun I may only have one shot... the one in the pipe.

If this happens with Gen 4s it could happen with ANY gun. The Gen 4 mag release is not THAT large or weak. I would try a different holster first.

This is one reason you carry a spare mag. Just in case.

Yay, problem fixed. I filed down the magazine release to be almost flush with the frame. It is still easy to operate and impossible for it to accidentally release the magazine while in the holster. I've tried sitting with it on and intentionally trying to get it to release but it stays in there. I can't for the life of me get the thing to accidentally release. It works perfectly now.

Does the gen4 have an extended release? I only have gen3 but i dont run extended controls on any of them. I have seen too many mags hit the deck to want extended releases. Any kydex holster can be custom fit in 5m with a heat gun.

I had this happen once with a leather holster, which I still have. I carry at the 3:00 'o clock position so it must have occurred in one of my vehicles. Big surprise when I got home and removed my gun to find the magazine loose in its well. Needless to say, I rarely ever use leather any more for Glocks.

I agree. It is not so much a gun issue, but rather a holster issue.

The other end of the spectrum is going for a mag release under stress and not being able to quickly and smoothly get that mag out.

All pluses and minuses to balance out for your needs.

I've heard of guys with those hybrid holsters using a knife to carve out an indent in the leather for the mag release so the holster doesn't hit it.

Its both. One reason I dont like extended controls on any gun I carry. A good kydex holster that fits the gun right can prevent the issue but best not to have the issue.

I've seen that happen with numerous handguns and holsters, I've even seen that happen with a 1911 and a Mil. holster. I even remember drawing my Glock 17 a few times and my thumb hitting the mag release dropping my mag. Others thought it was funny and I corrected that incident very quickly.

It never seems to happen when you use a real ridged holster though

My OWB Fobus holster does that with my G35 gen3 which has the ext mag release. Did it 1 time at the pistol range before practice night. But it only did it when I applied pressure on the gun in toward my body. When I got home that night I checked with my G4 27 as that's what I CC with that holster. Good to go thank goodness. Been using the holster for almost 6mo.

I mean dremel the magazine release. If I mess up they are not expensive to replace.
That isn't a good idea. The factory magazine release is pretty low and making it lower can make it very hard to release in an emergency. You depend on the gun to save your life, you only have to depend on the holster to carry the gun. It's a lot safer to modify the holster.

I find the gen3 release on most models diff to get reliable depression in my hands. So I took an extended & shaved it down by half. The other solution is relieve the frame at the release. I might give that a try but mess that up & I need a new frame.

I'm new to the forum, so forgive me if I'm not allowed to open such an old thread... Again, I know this is an old thread, however I don't really see any clear fix in any of the posts... I've been carrying a G26 Gen4 in a CB Supertuck and was experiencing this exact issue. The magazine release is ambidextrous so even though I am right-handed -- I switched the button to the right side of the frame and have had it that way for years (so yes I got very used to it that way)... I just recently got a G19 Gen4 also carrying in a Crossbreed Supertuck and am experiencing the exact same problem with the magazine releasing at random times. I don't hear the click and it's honestly the most disheartening feeling I could imagine. A single shot defensive carry is not my idea of comfort. In a short few weeks, I am now finding myself reaching to check the magazine many times throughout any day, which also alerts others to my carrying, especially since one of the top rules of CC is "don't touch, adjust or check your gun while concealed." I will if I have to, however I don't necessarily want to swap the mag release to the right side (like I had with the G26) so now looking for a solution. Any ideas would be great. BTW, I have tried dozens of holsters and the CB Supertuck is my choice so unless you have another perfect holster to suggest, that's not necessarily where I would lean. Thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks everyone for posting. I too choose the CB Supertuck at the 5 o’clock position as my go-to holster. I have carried multiple G19, G26 and G43 in this holster without incident. Recently, I bought a G29 and a Supertuck to go with it for CCW. I am not a fan of the Combat Cut. The first time I carried the G29 I noticed that the mag was loose when I got in my truck. Happened consistently so I went back to my G19 until I could figure something out. Thanks to this thread, I have filed down the mag release almost flush with the frame. Doesn’t affect my reload time under stress and no more loose mags when CCW! Thanks!

I’ve carried for years in a Crossbreed Supertuck. In my Crossbreeds I’ve carried 19’s Gen4 and 3, 26.4, and a 43. I’ve never experienced this issue. Are you using extended controls?

You might try moving your holster forward a bit and see if that helps, otherwise new holster.

All of my CHL holsters are IWB, and none of them cover the mag catch. They all have material that passes close to the catch creating an offset approximately the depth of the button.

To release the mag, something would have to impinge into that area and depress the button. And I think that would basically have to be my body. Nothing else is happening in there while the gun is being carried, and this has never been a problem for me.

All my Glocks are gen3, though, with smaller buttons.

I definitely would not want a holster that was configured so it could engage the button. The way all my carry gear works, there's a void around that area.

I guess with OWB, it's possible for something to get in there and actuate the catch. But with IWB, that area is protected.

I had one holster with a claw the kept my AIWB P365 very close to my body. When I would draw, my thumb would rake across the magazine release as I came over to get my grip.

The act of getting my gun released the magazine. I changed holsters after that. It was interesting because when I used a P365 with +2 extension, the magazine would stay in place because there was enough tension on the base plate to prevent it from ejecting but when I went to a P365XL grip and no extension it had freedom to pop out.

Yet another reason to vet your carry gear, no matter how small the change you think there is.
