I went to Cabelas in San Marcos say three months ago, and I noticed a used gun (can’t remember which), checked the price online and their used price was higher than a readily available new one. Pointed that out politely to the sales clerk, who treated me very rudely and told me that I could talk to a manager, but I would waste my time.

I did talk to the manager, also to complain about the way I had been treated. The manager promptly lowered the price, to a figure that was still higher than the one I had pointed out on my phone. I looked at him in utter disbelief, bought some cleaning patches, and left. They are terrible for buying guns I think.

I’ve found way better prices at my local gun shop and the shop at the gun range. I do see a lot of clueless people at Cabela’s wanting to buy guns.
The “Clueless” tag cuts both ways at Cabela’s. You know it’s time to go elsewhere for guns when a customer says, ‘I want to buy my wife a gun...what do you suggest?” And the Cabela’s gun counter salesman says, ‘We’ve got some purple one’s and some pink ones to choose from.”

What’s wrong with that, it’s how women shop for cars ain’t it?

I haven't been to a Cabelas in at least a year, but I've never purchased a gun from them anyway. Half-way due to prices, other half due to horrendous service. I always did like looking around in the gun library, though.

Bass pro sucks.

Its funny how they price firearms. Some years back I remember them having police trade in pistols for excellent prices. At the time I wanted to add to my collection I didnt have the money.

There have been a few instances where deranged/depressed folks have asked to handle a handgun without a trigger-lock and immediately loaded it from their pocket and shot themselves...I am just guessing, but this may be partially why they have locked all their handguns??...just sayin...I'm not a fan-boy, don't like Cabellas at all.
I read were that has happened at lgs before. Sad it happens because self deletion is not the answer at all. It's being a coward.

Oh that's why. I was at my local Cabela's yesterday after almost three months of avoiding the place because of temptation. I was thinking it might just be the handguns but when I wanted to try one of their rifles, it also has the trigger lock. So unfortunate for them, I was thinking of buying one. Ooops. I forgot they are always overpriced. I just moved on then.

I actually like Cabela’s. They have some good sales. Great selection of ammunition that you can actually hold in your hand and read the box. Good ammunition prices, 9mm range ammo for ten bucks. True, gun prices are on the high side unless what you want happens to be on sale. I have seen some good prices on used guns. And let’s not forget the saltwater taffy.

People complain about Cabela's, Bass Pro and a host of other large department stores with gun counters. Yet they still sell after all these years. Obviously many customers must have agreed with their customer services.

I was in the Louisville Cabelas ~3 weeks ago looking at Ruger 22/45s. I wanted to check out the physical difference from the MKIII and MKIV lite versions, as I was in the market for a .22lr for fun and easy range therapy. With both versions of Lite on the counter, I asked "Is that the famed take-down button folks rave about?"
The lady behind the counter told me, "I'm not allowed to discuss or show any sort of take down procedures."
Ooooookay. So I said," I assume that when I press that button the upper flips up away from the frame, which just makes cleaning easier. I know 22s get super dirty so I do care about something like that being easier." She gave me the same response.
I also had them pull the newer Beretta M9-22 in the case to compare against the MKIV. I watched two people behind the counter try to force the Beretta mag into the Ruger by mistake for a good 2 mins.
I buy 22tcm there two boxes at a time because 1. it's the only local place that has it and I've lost around $300 already trying to order it online and 2. they only ever have 2 boxes and no one will ever try to check the back for more. They always tell me they put what they have for it on the shelf. Aside from that, they don't really inspire much confidence.

I like the idea of self-deletion, just not at the expense of others.

Buy a gun then go off into the boonies or an alley then off yourself. Don't rent a gun or pretend to buy a gun then off yourself in front of others.

Jump off a bridge into a river where swimmers/boaters are around. Don't jump off highway over passes and cause traffic jams.

Overdose on something and die in your own bedroom/house. Don't make a cop shoot you, especially AFTER killing some other innocent bystanders.

They opened a new Cabela's store within 35 mins. from me a few years ago . I buy a lot of my hunting clothes from their online store , when they run sales , so I went in the local store and was not impressed at all . They did build the store in a popular area , so it might last longer than Gander Mountain lasted here . I like basspro better and they carry most things like their catalog . I have even bought 2 shotguns from them when they were running a sale and the gun mfg. was running a rebate ( I'm cheap , I know ) . I also like getting a beer after looking and on the weekends you can't beat the $1 hotdogs & sodas .

It's not just Cabela's, most of the big-box stores, including Dunham's, won't allow you to remove the trigger lock. It wouldn't take much for some nut to chamber a round and pull the trigger. I can understand their caution, however foolish it may seem.
My LGS does not lock any of its guns and rifles in particular can be handled on the floor without any oversight.
