Uzi Does It.
Before all the cute catch phrases like "HK - No Compromise" or "Glock Perfection", there was "Uzi Does It". Everybody knew what an Uzi was, regardless if it was the Uzi, the Mini-Uzi or the Micro Uzi (aka Uzi Pistol). Of course, Chuck Norris made famous the Micro Uzi in his superlative action movie Invasion USA.
By the 1980s the H&K MP5 became the pre-eminent submachine gun and interest in the Uzi waned somewhat, but it still remained an iconic firearm. IMI converted the three Uzi model lines into closed bolt semiautos for the US civilian market, but reliability was an issue, especially with the full size model. With the advent of Bush Senior's import weapons ban, the Uzi pretty died a quiet death in the American civilian market.
As Israeli Military Industries became Israeli Weapons Industries, the Micro Uzi got a facelift AND also got converted to semiauto form (again) for the US market. Improvements included Picatinny rails, plastic lower with reversible mag release button and a compact stock that actually works well. Also a name change to Uzi Pro. In the US civilian market, the Uzi Pro has two flavors: regular and arm brace. I went with the arm brace version because why the heck not?!!
Why now, after all these years, a semiauto Uzi in my stash? Because it's end of February 2019 and I hadn't bought any guns yet AND...well, Uzi Does It. I have an IMI Galil AR and a bunch of IWI rifles, so might as well add another Hebrew Hammer (more like maybe a rubber mallet).
Those that want dimensions and specs can go watch unboxing YouTube videos or go directly to IWI US website for that sort of information. I'm just going to cover some of the feels aspect of the Uzi Pro.
Trigger: Let's get down to brass tack - it sucks. Heavy and spongy. Maybe a hair lighter and smoother than the old Uzis but not much. It's an Uzi trigger pull.
Bolt: Still a big ass hunk of steel and firing from a closed bolt position. You can feel it cycles back and forth. No bolt hold open device. Nor does it lock on empty. Old school buzz gun design.
Lower part of the receiver: Plastic to save a bit of weight with reshaped grip. Still feels like a 2x4 but the recessed mag release button is harder to activate now.
Grip safety: Still there. It needs to be depressed before the bolt can be retracted to chamber a round.
Iron sights: Fully adjustable post front and U-notch rear with white dots. The U-notch rear sight is nearly worthless. It's too close to the eyes for reference. You can get a low cheekweld and use the rear sight notch like a ghost ring, but otherwise precision aiming and shooting is for the birds. Needs a red dot badly.
Shooting impressions: The gun stays on target quite well. Low recoil (duh, it's heavy and it's shooting the 9mm Luger) with hardly any muzzle rise (probably vertical grip that allows you to pull the brace tight against the shoulder). I was able to hit 6" gongs and hard foam balls with ease once I got the rear sight to be used like an open ghost ring.
Magazine: The 20-rounds and 25-rounds mags that come with the gun are a bear to load even though they're double stacked and double fed. Because the Uzi Pro has reversible mag release button, the magazines are cut with two catch holes - one on each side. What this means is that the Pro mag can be used in any old Uzi, but the old Uzi mag won't work unless the left side hole is cut in. Otherwise the mags are identical.
I shot about 150-rounds through it (2-mags x 3-guys). Naturally, I had to slap a red dot on it (SIG Romeo 4H - cheap Chinese red dot but this gun is for goofing around more than anything else), Streamlight TLR-2G flashlight/green laser combo and a single point sling. It makes me feel like I'm with Shayeret Maktal running around slotting radical Islamists or something. Teehee.
What's my take/your take on the Uzi Pro?
a. It's a cool modern upgrade to an old reliable.
b. It's old design and it shows in the ergonomics.
c. It's an Uzi. Nuff said.
d. A person is probably better served with a more modern PCC/pistol-brace combo.
e. It's an Uzi. Nuff said.
So, buy it if you like having an Uzi that works. Or wanting an Uzi just for grins and giggles.
Now, I need to get me the "Uzi Does It" T-shirts.
