I tend to lean toward what the manual indicates which is to clean and lube but not remove the copper antiseize before shooting it. If I had problems with it I would probably try some stronger ammunition first.
 
you should be stripping and cleaning the firing pin channel every time you clean anyways IMO.
I am of the belief that as long as it is properly cleaned and lubricated and not exposed to any especially harsh conditions perhaps once a year or so is fine. Oddly some folks that see a lot of Glocks seem to think that is fine too. Like Glock for instance.
