Best night stand hand gun?

Which of these three guns would you keep on the night stand:

1) Stainless Baby Eagle .45 - 10+1

2) Glock 27 with night sights (my CC gun)

3) Glock 19 with night sights (primary range gun)

I shoot them all about the same, so I guess it's just a capacity vs. stopping power decision. This is academic though, my Remington 870 with 00 buck will be my 1st choice of course. :patriot:

I used to have a G19 Gen 4 with a 17-round magazine and X-Grip loaded with Gold Dot 124 + Ps and an M3 Tactical Illuminator attached in the nightstand. I recently purchased a SIG P320 X-Carry and now utilize that as my home defense/nightstand handgun; same ammo choice, but now I have a 21-round magazine loaded in it along with a TLR-7 tactical light and X-Ray 3 night sights.

If the 870 is on standby at arms reach. I would go g27.

My reasoning is thus. A home invasion rarely occurs to someone without some connection to narcotics (my experience and I said rarely not never.) A long arm is a home invasion gun. Someone's breaking a window, kicking in your door etc. Your reasonably certain someone is breaking in with bad intentions.

Most (again not all) bumps in the night are harmless. Daughter comes home late neighbors doing something, dogs barking whatever. In that case a flashlight in hand and a gun in the pocket is imo a better choice. A g27, a good rechargeable tac light and a sticky holster works well for this. Again my opinion. But I keep our carry guns ( shield and an xds ) along with a couple flashlights and my cel phone in my nightstand. An ar with a wml comes out of the safe and leans against the wall.

Glock 21 ........As measured in decibels, the 45 ACP produces less sonic energy than 9mm or 40 S&W .......
This post and others has me questioning my current choice of M&P 9mm with apex trigger and streamlight.

Ugh.... golfballs.... i dont think so /grin

I think im going to put my light on oneof my .45s with the stock trigger. Makes sense. Now, do i keep one in the chamber..... hmmmm... my aussie gives me an early warning.... i should have time to rack the slide.

No, it's only a discussion on capacity. In service calibers there is no such thing as 'stopping power'. In other words, within service calibers there is no difference with modern ammunition in terminal performance. Stopping power is a gun rag term used by those trying to sell you something. Nothing more.

So the logical choice based on your three choices is the G19 since you can have the highest initial capacity.

I don't want to start a boring caliber war here but my opinion is that capacity is not the only consideration (among generally accepted effective self defense calibers).
There are other factors, both circumstantial and related to physics/ terminal ballistics, that someone might regard as influential to his choice of HD handgun chambering.
Maybe 9mm is the end-all-be-all of cartridges, but only with specifically high end ammo that gets enough velocity to perform as desiged. Barrel length and load choice have to be compatible. Other, bigger calibers tend to not have the same detrimental effect, even with lower shelf ammunition.

The .357 mag and Sig may seem unsuitable for HD, due to blast and noise, but you cannot deny the terminal ballistics. The FAMS carries 357 Sig for use inside airplanes, which is quite a cramped space. I am thinking the sound and blast is not the top priority for them.

.40 vs 9 vs .45 doesn't much matter to me but .45 is usually quietest, makes the biggest holes (some offerings expand to 1 inch), and penetrates the least. Seems, on paper at least, a good way to go if the firearm is purely for HD.
I'd say more important would be the reliability and particular ammunition choice, rather than caliber or capacity.

Certainly a reasonable set of criteria.

Mine changed when I started shooting under the clock and watched my split times with good hits. I realized if I have one second's worth of shooting (for instance) in a defensive situation, I'm regularly getting off 4 shots of 9mm with good hits and partially into my 5th vs 3 shots with .45.

So the big .45s might expand more, but I'm quite a bit faster on target with the 9mm.

Either works just fine, but the largely unscientific Paul Harrel meat target has shown some amazing opening bullets in gel fail to open reasonably often so depending on extra expansion may or may not be a good idea.

Then again, odds are I'll never need to find out in my whole life and I hope that's the case.

This P220 Carry has been my night stand gun for years. I really like the DA mode with no safety as well as an all-metal heavier full-sized pistol for a night stand gun. I have taken my wife to the range and shown her that she just needs to aim and pull the trigger. 45 ACP is a very big round, so i have considered changing this out for the CZ SP-01 which also has a very nice DA/SA setup with a Decocker. The CZ is a tank with very little felt recoil in 9mm. It also has a nice rail on it, but I really like shooting it. I carry a couple of pistols in the car (in a bolted safe), so when I have time to drop by the range, I keep my favorite shooters in there. Decisions decisions.

What makes me comfortable in a night stand gun: Full sized, no safety, heavier build material and rail for a tac light.
hammer or striker is fine
DA/SA works best for me
Steel or Alloy works best for me
9mm or 45 acp work best for me
Actually a heavy revolver (686) with 38 or 38 +p rounds could work (but no rail).

357 magnum and 10mm have too much muzzle flip, noise, and flash for me. This is probably tight quarters, and shooting my 10mm and 357 magnums in a tight place seems counter productive.

40 could work, and 357 sig might work, but you have to consider wall penetration too. Defensive JHPs in 9mm and 45acp seem to have the best designs so as to not over penetrate inside a home.
