Hi guys.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to excellent CHL classes in Texas? (preferably around the DFW Metroplex)

I know this is just for the basic Texas CHL license, but my wife is new to firearms, so I'd prefer her to listen to an trustworthy expert on her first class. I don't want her first class about guns to be from some guy filling her head with half-truths or misguided opinions.

I will take the class again, just to re-familiarize myself with the laws.

Thanks

Edit: Just as importantly... does anyone have places NOT to go? (Should be avoided?)

HL training is HL training. Not firearms training.
Since we only have to do this once any more, I can't say. Our local judge retired and isn't doing them any more. He was an interesting gent and concentrated on the laws governing the license.
Good luck on your quest.

To your point I guess, we should focus on the laws.

However, even though the class is intended to me mostly about laws, you can't totally divorce it from firearms. I have taken the class twice before, and each time the instructors talked some about calibers, weapon choices, tactics, their opinions, etc. Maybe it is different now in 2018.

I took my CHL class at Eagle Gun Range, in Lewisville. They recommend that you have the gun, that you plan to CC, with you on the day of the class, so you can qualify with that weapon. As long as your weapon meets state requirements for caliber, there is no issue. Every single person in my LTC class (18 of us) already had their gun and were ready to use it for range qualification.

That being said, the class is not about weapon choice, caliber choice, tactics, or the instructor's opinions; it's about the law and how it applies to those who are licensed to carry a handgun in Texas (LTC). It was also about teaching us how to keep from getting in trouble with the law; what "not" to do with our CCW.

Generally, "tactics" would be taught in an Advanced Concealed Carry Course. Weapon and caliber selection should be done before your LTC class.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like you got some winners for class teachers. Sorry.
The only thing the class "should" go over is range rules, safety on the range and a general overview, as far a s the firearms. It isn't a "learn to shoot" or anything else class.
As long as minimum caliber and requirements are met, a LTC class is about the license. Like Steve said, all the other should be taken care of separately.
FWIW, my mom really enjoyed her class in Longview. Probably too far out but I can get info from her if you want. I don't have any personal experience with them, but On Target in Mabank is supposed to have a good program. 903-887-4867

Texas has minimum caliber requirements?
The minimum caliber requirement was imposed for the range qualification portion of the LTC class.

There was a minimum caliber requirement of .380 ACP, but it seems that the state legislature lowered that requirement to .22LR back in September 2017...

The cheapest, fastest and most convenient one. It’s a formality with very basic “firearms” training.

Then, spend the money on a real shooting school. Or, vice versa. Get real shooting training first, then the license school.

I’ve known the folks that work here. They are reputable (one of, if not the first, CHL schools in Texas). $139.00. One stop, one day. Ammo and gun included.
