I own a bunch of Beretta's. A couple 92fs and a Vertec.

Saw a 92f that I would love to buy. Never seen one in the wild.

Question... Are the older mags for the 92f and FS mags interchangable?

Yep! What Bigchuck83 said.

If a model 92 has a side button magazine release then the mag is interchangeable.

Some older 92S sports side button release and some sports heel release.

By heel release, it meant side button heel release and not the typical heel catch like the rest of the euro guns.

The mags. in a new M9A3 that are tan look different. Are the std. 92/M9 mags. compatible? I do not have one, just curious. Thanks.
They’re all compatible.

I don’t know why beretta still sells the 15-rounds parkerized M9 mags but they do. My guess is to retain the M9’s authenticity.

As far as I can tell right now there are five types of magazines, not counting the 20-rounds extended mags.

1. M9 parkerized 15-rounders.
2. M9A1 15-rounds with anti-friction coating.
3. 92-series 17-rounds with the slick bright black finish.
4. M9A3 17-rounds with sand resistance finish.
5. Ninety-Two with the 17-rounds grey PVD finish, which looks like the one I mentioned in #2.

Personally I recommend buying the Mec-Gar mags. They’re cheaper and also come with anti-friction coating that seems to be more evenly applied than the Beretta mags.

And unless something has changed, all Mecgar mags are cut for both types.
The current mec gar 18-rounds mags do not have the cut on the bottom right side for the heel magazine catch.

Every 92F I've seen was the heel catch, was there a side catch version too? All the surplus ones I see for sale online are euro...
The surplus ones should be 92S. I’m fairly certain that by the time the F model, it’s been switched to side release.

The M9 was both 92F and 92FS. The 92F was adopted as the M9. Then the whole debacle about Navy SEALs shooting proof loads/slide flying off prompted Beretta to modify the M9 to take the half-moon looking thingie on the left rear of the frame with a slide that had the concomitant cut to ride over the half moon thingie.

Beretta then also offered this modification to the 92-Series and called it the FS.

I had to take a bunch of my unit’s M9 pistols in to get the mods done to them during Desert Shield. The 101st Airborne Corps Support Group armorers installed the half moons and slapped on new slides. It was like a day’s turnaround for fifty pistols.

The video below compared the modifications between the F and FS.

For those who are looking to buy mags for the 92S heel release pistols,

Only the current beretta M9 mags come with the cut on the right side bottom. I say again, only Beretta M9 mags will have this cutout. If you buy GI M9 mags made by Check Mate or whoever else, they will not have the cut out.

Nor will other Beretta 92-Series mags have the cutout either.

Below is a photo of current production M9, M9A1 and standard 92FS mags. I bought these mags brand new in beretta boxes but two or three months ago.

Only the M9 has the cutout for 92S use.
