I won't recommend this to anyone, but what I do if the belt loop is long enough, thin enough and stiff enough, is to cut the stitching and install a heavy duty snap so I can pass it through the webbing and secure it.

But now that I think about it, a button anchored with strong thread or a hook-and-eyelet type closure on the end of loop might work as well, though I've never tried it.

If it is short and stubby like many belt loops, then I use 550 cord to secure it.
