Was OCONUS for awhile. Trying to get back into the swing of things. Couldn't get ammo for personal use unless it was from the Taliban. But I'm not the best of terms with them for obvious reasons. I have some ammo, but not like I used to. Should I go ahead and stock up now? I know it's three times what it used to be. But what the heck. I need to start plinking again. I have a few more Glocks I need to limber up.

Any thoughts? I was thinking of picking up some PMC JHP 9mm just to have and maybe some Wolf FMJ 9mm for plinking. I need some 45ACP and 00 for the broomstick too. Ammoseek still reliable? Any vendors to stay away from? A lot of the old stores I used to use seemed to have changed. But I don't want to go to the lowest bidder and get crap or not at all.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm sure I'll be around more often once I get the girls pointing downrange like I used to.

Norma has some good ammo and good pricing. Direct, from them:

Other Ruag ammo can be found here:

For US stuff (and others):

For handgun, 9mm is being pumped out in massive numbers. Other calibers are more hit and miss. Pricing for 9mm is down to just over $0.30, per (for decent brass cased FMJ), at best. Most is going for $0.33-0.40.

.45 ACP is much harder to locate and the pricing still is very high, compared to equivalent 9mm.

00 bunch shot is also fairly difficult to locate, especially, if you want a specific loading.

Ammoseek is the only place I buy ammo, its just too much locally. Just read the reviews, they have been pretty much spot on. I look for reputable dealers and reasonable shipping. On rare occasions, when all the planets align, I can find a box or two at a reasonable price locally but few and far between.

I just ordered some Norma on black Friday, waiting for delivery.

That's the first ammo I've purchased since stocking up on all the super sales two years ago when they were practically giving away Federal Black Packs with rebates and other deals.

Prices aren't anywhere that low, but it seemed a reasonable time to top off the supply. Prices are a little better than they have been and who knows when the next price jump will hit.

Your question on “is it time”.

It depends on your situation and current inventory.
At present the pricing trend has been downwards week over week.
If you are going to buy a lot, Start buying some every week ( or month) and you may be able to average a lower price by phasing in.
If you are not buying a lot……it’s not as big a deal and today’s price is very much better than it was.
Don’t ever get caught without a minimum threshold.
At the very least replace what you shoot.

I have a decent stock and have avoided buying due to prices. Two weeks ago, I was at Cabelas and they had their Herter 115 grain 9mm target ammo for $32 for 100 rounds so I grabbed some. With the current administration’s lack of understanding of how supply and demand works, it wouldnt surprise me if they do something stupid to drive up prices again so I’m going to start buying some here and there. Probably not a bad idea to stock up if you can.

Basically the ammo companies are making tons of FMJ and then charging premium HP prices for it. Hornady.......not one of the big 4 is the only company making enough premium SD ammo to at least begin to supply the market. I am not a big Hornady fan but give them credit for supplying good SD ammo when the big 4 are busy making over priced second tier SD rounds and fmjs.

I have seen a lot of Hornady Critical Duty stuff, but I have also seen a lot of HST and Gold Dot. They almost always have some flavor of HST and/or Gold Dot. This is at the GT Distributors I try to visit, every couple of months. I haven’t seen any Rangers, in a long time. Not have I seen Golden Sabers, but those weren’t being made, at all.

I rarely saw GDs even before the ammo shortage began, HSTs are hit and miss but some type of Hornady SD ammo has always been sitting on the shelves in my area.

I could have bought 9 mm for around $16/50 locally, checking Academy Sports or Cabela's often. Ammoseek is still a great source, but not always the best pricing as it was prior to the riots and virus. On Ammoseek, steel case 9 mm is only slightly cheaper than brass. I have seen steel case Tula 9 mm with a higher price than Blazer brass at Academy Sports this year. laxammo has PMC has FMJ 9 mm for $325 a case and PMC hollow points for $25/50, links below.

At the LGS, I can buy the off brand 12 gauge 00 buckshot for around dollar per shell. Remington, Winchester, or Federal buckshot is $7-8 for 5 shells. Link below to a website selling Federal 00 buck for a dollar a shell. I bought some Federal Premium personal defense 00 buck for $11 a box recently at Cabela's. It is a few dollars cheaper online, but I won't be shooting it much.

45 ACP is around $30 at the LGS, but you'll better prices online.

It is difficult to say if now is a good time to stock up. There is not that much ammo on the big box store shelves, so people are buying it at these elevated prices. Biden's executive order banning the importation of Russian ammo did not help. I have bought from laxammo with no problems and have never traded with bucking horse. For online retailers, I have used Target Sports USA the most, but they don't seem to have the deals or inventory currently. For reloaders, sourcing primers is particularly costly. My guess is that Vista Outdoors will continue to be very profitable in 2022.
