So what's the best cleaner/what are you guys using to clean your AR15s?

Looking to buy something I can use in a pressurized container I have that you can spray solvents in with air from a compressor as opposed to buying a cleaner in an aerosol?

Does NOT have to be an "all in one" cleaner necessarily if there is something better?

Thanks -

Eric

Breakfree/CLP, Hoppe’s, etc. There is nothing special needed to clean an AR. Heck, when I was in the USMC, we used WD40 to clean our M16’s and M60 machine guns.

So basically, you're going to apply with a paint sprayer?

Would use a dedicated solvent. Make up a batch of Ed's Red. Kroil or Hoppes #9 would work fine, too.

No, one of these, I already use one for other solvents, but I do not to wish the same solvent on my guns (and sprayer for that matter, I plan to buy a second one for cleaning my guns specifically) -

I did this to stop buying expensive aerosol spray cans of gun cleaner.

I just wish now to use a good cleaner in a spray format for my ARs also.

I like it when we get to use these and whatever solvent the Army puts in them:

Yeah, if I had the room in my garage and I shot that much I would LOVE to have a dedicated parts tank for gun stuff alone.

Part of the reason I came up with the idea for the solvent spray when I saw the guys in the shop using them for brake clean in place of the old aerosol spray cans of it. Shops are now just buying brake clean/whatever solvent they are using in the shop in 55 gal drums, and just filling the little solvent air pressurized spray cans from it. Much more efficient expense wise, and less waste from not having the cans.

I use one now in my garage for car stuff, why I want a second dedicated one for guns/gun cleaner.

Then I'd go with something more a solvent, and less a general purpose gun product. Things at the volatile end - whether brake/carb cleaner or "gunscrubber" types - demand a well ventilated/outdoor setup. Plus they really strip metal bare, more than I believe necessary or desirable. Bare metal clean sounds like a good idea, but if you somehow fail to relube something.....and it's not hard to miss a spot.

Gallon of kroil is about $65.

Kroil really is a great way to go. You don't need strong solvents on an AR.

BTW, I just want to be clear, I am NOT looking to use brake clean on my ARs/guns.

Just simply the solvent sprayer I showed, again only b/c it's cheaper and easier to use when spraying than aerosol cans that are expensive too.

I am also NOT hung up on an "all in one" cleaner/lube, just whatever is the easiest to put hands in a slightly larger container and whatever is best for the guns/ARs to clean and protect them.

Hoppes 9, LSA, "Super Tech" brake parts cleaner, a shop rag, and a package of .22 cal patches, with a Dewey coated cleaning rod. I just pour out a little #9 in one of those little stamped troughs that used to come in gun cleaning kits, and dip the M 16 brush in it and start brushing. Maybe a sprayer might be quicker, but I just accept it as a given, the time it takes to clean and lube an AR 15 good n sanitary. Brake cleaner will not hurt steel or aluminum parts- just oil it well after.

I use Sweet`s 7.62 solvent on all my rifle`s barrels , specially on my eastern type AKs that shoot corrosive surplus ammo .
This thing is very powerful and will clean up the inside of barrels really , really well ... Hoppe`s 9 is not even at the same level by a long shot . If you are used to clean your barrel with Hoppe`s 9 , you will be horrified by the amount of dirt that this solvent will take out of your barrel , lol...
First, I run a patch with the Sweet`s solvent thru the barrel and leave it to work for 10 minutes . Then , I run a Cooper bore brush a few times and clean up with Hoppe`s 9 . Finally , I finish with a run or two of a patch with Brake Parts Cleaner and lastly , a patch with CLP ... perfect.
It takes a bit of work, but the result is great . My AR-15 is also cleaned up with this solvent . If I happen to , in occasion , take out and shoot any of my two CZ-52 vintage pistols (7.62x25) that also use surplus ammo , I use the solvent , too .
This is only used for the inside of barrels , of course . I use Hoppe`s 9 and CLP for everything else .
