Another SPP Comparison (w/VV N320 powder)

For what it's worth, here is another SPP comparison. 9mm with 4.5 gr. VV N320 powder, 115 gr. FMJ pulled but sorted for length bullets, all once fired Win cases. Gun is M&P 4.25" APEX barrel, APEX trigger, RMR sight. 2x5 shot group average (also measured as 1x10 shot group), bag rested, 25 yd.

Where I had earlier results for an identical load, I included those in parentheses to show how results varied. (~3rd range session since, so probably time for a good cleaning! :).)

VVN320 with Fed 100 was pretty good this loading/testing, as was my previous time, coming close to my most accurate load with 115 gr bullets. Gives me a couple of decent 115 gr. FMJ loads, with flexibility to use different powder/primer & a slightly milder load.

Fiocchi again was the slightly lower V, slightly higher std. dev load.

Use Up or Drought Scenario: Won't pursue further a Fiocchi 115 gr load. More likely R 6 1/2 for a "use up" load. [But separately, I bumped the powder up slightly for my Fiocchi/W572 147 gr load reported previously and got 2nd best grouping compared to CCI/Power Pistol. So if I got into a primer bind, that 147 gr load is where I would use my Fiocchi inventory. (Fiocchi still had high teens std. dev. though.)]

Sidenote: I had my LabRadar setup. A guy came by with a Garmin and wanted to compare results with them. Over several shots, results were essentially the same, differing by only a consistent 2-3 fps lower velocity measured with the Garmin for a load that was ~ 970 fps. And the Garmin did seem to be significantly easier to use i.e. much less sensitive to line up issues.

I use VV320 almost exclusively for loading 9mm with Fed 100's. I run 3.7 gr with 147 gr Zero JHP's and make 130 power factor. Slow stuff and very accurate. My race gun also doesn't get all that dirty either and makes for quick cleaning. Yes, Vihtavuori costs a little more but I typically use less of it than other powders so the price seems to balance out. Coupled with the clean burn I'm pretty happy.

BTW, what is the recoil like loading 4.5 gr and pushing a 115 grain bullet?

Curiously, 3.7 gr. VV N320/Fed 100 load you mentioned gave me the largest groups with 147 gr. FMJs in the same M&P and also in my 8" barrel gun. YMDoesV :)

Recoil with 4.5 gr and 115 gr bullet: Much more than bunny fart like ... but noticeably less than the Power Pistol load I referenced. Less kick out and throwing the cases all over the place if I recall correctly. So moderately robust overall. But as I'm sure you are aware, at or near top of the VV chart, depending on bullet.

The biggest problem at least for me was trying to find VV320 in the quantity that I needed. The majority of top GSSF shooters use TiteGroup So that is what I ended up using and could find. When you go through 400 rds. Of 9MM and 100rds. Of 45 ACP just about every week you go through a lot of powder even with bunny fart loads.

Big fan of N320, but I save it these days for the .45ACP.

I'm getting by with some Clays for now, but prefer E3 in 9mm for competition. Don't ask about E3 load data as it does not exist. It's close to Red Dot and I got what I needed from the Ballistician at Alliant many years ago. Been through about 50 pounds of it.

WST was another I used in 9mm with good success.
