Neighbor has one, took off the front thing grip, added standard ak wood stuff.
a center fire systems rifle, so it’s barrel is probably junk.

What is a good start to get a chrome lined barrel to make better quality?
If there is any.
Thank you in advance.

Replacing a barrel on an AK is not a easy task, unlike an AR. How do you know it is junk? There is an art to AK's and accepting and controlling its inherent old school character. My AMD65 serves me very well for tactical purposes- been to many schools with it

If it is an AM65, it has the pinned and welded muzzle device and the actual barrel is 12" or so. Removing it makes it shorter than legal.

My AMD65 with its original 12” barrel and welded extension, does pretty good. This is 10rds of Golden Tiger at 100yds offhand with iron sights.

Offhand?
You must mean prone, supported? Damn good shooting for any AK. Nice.
Thanks. Yup, offhand. When I got to the range that day, there were a couple old fudds there sighting in bolt guns. They kind of gave me "the look" when I pulled out the AMD65...
When I shot that group, turned out they were watching through spotting scopes. One came over and said "that thing shoots pretty good...is it legal?"
Lol, fudds.

'Question about your "welded" on barrel extension/brake; it's difficult to see in your image, but is the extension/brake that's attached to the muzzle of your AMD-65 build welded only to the base of the front sight? If so, then the front sight along with the attached extension/brake can be removed by simply driving out the two pins that attach the sight to the barrel and unscrewing/removing the extension/brake from the muzzle, which is not legal. Such devices must be permanently attached.

For title 1 firearm legality such a barrel extension/muzzle device must be attached via BATFE approved methods. See BATFE response below in regards to this issue, in particular welding, which is dated 1998, but the ruling has not changed:

DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms
Washington, D.C. 20226

JUN 18 1998 F:FPD:FTB:RAT
3311

Dear Mr. :

This refers to your letter of March 31, 1998, in which you ask
about permanently attaching a muzzle device to various firearms.

A muzzle device, such as a muzzle brake or barrel extension, which
is attached to a barrel by means of welding or high temperature
silver solder having a melting point of at least 1,100 degrees
Fahrenheit, is considered to be part of the barrel for purposes of
measurement. A seam weld extending at least one-half the
circumference of the barrel or four equidistant tack welds around
the circumference of the barrel are adequate for this purpose.

A firearm having a muzzle brake, cap, or barrel extension
permanently attached by those same methods to cover the threads on
a barrel, would not be considered to have a threaded muzzle.
Please note, however, that any muzzle device or barrel extension
which functions as a flash suppressor or grenade launcher would
still constitute one of the qualifying features of a semiautomatic
assault weapon as that term is defined in 18 U.S.C. section
921(a)(30(B). Industrial adhesive products are not an acceptable
method for permanently attaching a muzzle device.

Mr.

We trust that the foregoing has been responsive to your inquiry.
If you have further questions concerning this matter, please
contact us.

Sincerely yours,

[signed]

The question is really, who enforces those ATF descriptions? Those who truly read and worry about the exact description (ie law abiding) are not the ones at risk from the ATF. I have not had the pleasure of anyone in my 30+ years of gun ownership and public displays, ask to measure my barrel or look at the muzzle device.

To be safe, I personally have a TAX stamp for my AMD, and I took off the muzzle device, and replaced with a simple short flash hider-- so mine is a legal NFA SBR. The original muzzle device , I just twisted off- it was not "legally" attached.

BTW silver solder and tack welds are much easier to cut than a getting to a hidden welded pin.

I'm sure you've heard the expression, "Nothing's illegal - until you get caught."

"...who enforces those ATF descriptions?" ATF and State, County, and Local LE. They're not stopping autos or entering houses like the Gestapo looking for illegal firearms...they "find" them while engaged in their normal LE routines and duties.

For example...a friend of a friend was once a respected cardiac surgeon, who had a great practice, was living in a multimillion dollar home on 16 or so acres of property, located in a coveted North Shore town of Long Island, NY. He found himself suspected of some illegal activity related to his practice, and after an investigation a search warrant was executed in his home to look for evidence; his "secret room" was discovered where he kept his firearms, amongst them numerous handguns which he was licensed to own and carry, a number of bolt and semi automatic rifles, and a few shotguns of different varieties. Upon closer inspection of his semiauto rifles by LE it was determined that he had in his possession two "assault rifles" that were not registered as such per NY Safe Act regulations.

Long story short the powers to be busted him for the NY Safe Act violations because thanks to the undisputable evidence that was found in his home the case against him was "cut and dry", and Gov. Cuomo was looking to make an example of him (because ahem, next to noone had been convicted of violating the NY Safe Act), so he was sentenced to 5 years in an upstate NYS correctional facility, and of course he lost his license to practice medicine. He's set to be released early this year, and as a convicted felon he will be prohibited from owning firearms.

The Dr. never paraded his assualt rifles around at local ranges...supposedly they never left his residence.

You also don't have to do anything to bring attention to yourself or be suspected of any wrongdoing to get "caught" either...you could have the misfortune one day of having a fire in your home due to a faulty electrical device; after the fire was contained and it was safe to enter the dwelling for inspection the Fire Chief "finds" your AMD-65 screw together build with it's original short barrel propped up in the corner of the Master bedroom, who then brings it to the attention to the local LE, where they break out the tape measure and determine that it's an unregistered SBR - and you're busted.

You might have heard other "stories" like...the girlfriend who calls the cops on her boyfriend because he was drunk and smacked her around...the cops show up and are invited into the home, where proud as a peacock they see a 6' tall reefer plant growing in the living room. After looking through the rest of the house they find a handgun, rifle, shotgun and ammo; both parties are felons so they both get busted on illegal firearms and weed charges.

Ignorance of the law is one thing, which in and of itself is no excuse for breaking the law, but I'd venture to say that most people who are smart enough to put together an AKM rifle are smart enough to know in what configuration it needs to be for legality, so taking the effort to weld a longer muzzle device onto the front sight of an AMD-65 that is simply pinned onto the barrel would be an obvious skirting of the rules regarding permanant attachment of muzzle devices/Title 1 firearm barrel length requirements.

I appreciate you doing the right thing by legally SBR'ing your AMD-65 rifle. Showing respect for the law not only protects yourself but allows you to set a good example for others to do the right thing...whether you yourself agree with the Constitutionality of such restrictions/rules or not.

My CZ Bren 805 SP1 pistol with it's 10.9" barrel was crying out to be SBR'd, so I filed the Form 1 and when I received it back approved I had the proper ATF mandated engraving performed on the receiver and made arrangements to locate, purchase, and install the proper rear head and original CZ collapsing/folding stock. It now mimics, sans the F/A capabilities, the 805 A2 short barreled rifle used by the Czech Army:

For me, doing things the right way is the only way to do things. Those who disagree may do so at their own peril...

He shouldn't be mad. These foreign made are not easily available today and may be worth lots more soon. Probably out of stock now.

Chrome lining is more important if shooting corrosive, or stupid (ammo dumps with a magic trigger) -- most stuff available in US today is non-corrosive, unless it its from the 80's era surplus. Yugo Ak's for a time were not chrome lined, and Century is producing guns currently without chrome lining.

Still ammo is gonna cost more than 25cents a round now (a quarter thrower). So shooting enough ammo to destroy the barrel (say 10K rounds) = $2500 per 10K rounds fired--- so if the barrel lasts longer than 50k rounds for your friend, he spent $12,500 on ammo.

That is the key. They will use this when they are adding on to other charges. What's the persons name so we can fact check this story, so its not one of those forum myths, and big foot stories to prove a point?

BTW. They can come to my house anytime to see all my legal NFA's.

I don't believe in myths, and I certainly don't need to create stories out of thin air to prove a point. The Dr.'s name is Anthony Moschetto...it's been nearly 5 years since my friend shared the story with me so I inadvertantly left out some details, and I also thought that the Dr. was a cardiac surgeon, but apparently he was a just a cardiologist. You can read about it below:

Busted:
Sent away:
I have no issues with ATF arriving at my home either, whether the visit is related to my FFL license or my NFA devices, as I own nothing illegal.

:D It is always a friend of a friend of my buddies' cousin's sister. That's how "I swear it's true " grows into Loch Ness, creepy clowns, organized pedophile rings in pizza parlors, and UFOs.
