Alien Gear: ShapeShift kit vs Cloak Tuck 3.0

Hey all:

I have an Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.0 for my Glock 43 and I really like it. I did modify it slightly by heating and bending the outer wings inward a bit for a more conforming fit (I ain't built square/flat). I wear the holster at about 3:30, maybe cheating towards 4:00.

Anyway, I'm intrigued by the ShapeShift kit and would like some info from someone who might have both:

The ShapeShift IWB hybrid configuration looks like it might be blocky and maybe a little wider than the Cloak Tuck. How does the ShapeShift IWB configuration compare to the CT 3.0?

The ShapeShift OWB slide configurations looks like it might conceal well. Does it?

I'm not much on AIWB, but am curious how that configuration works with the ShapeShift.

Finally, it looks like the ShapeShift is held together by friction and tight fitting parts; how does that translate to longevity? Is it holding up? Have you lost any small parts? Have things fallen off?

Thanks for your input.

Well I never found a need for holster to change how I use it . Might be you will have to buy one of those shapeshift rigs to see what you think . Might be the cheapest way you get some idea if you have an interest in OWB carry or appendix .

I have used the same hybrid rig for 15 or 16 years and like your cloak you can change the kydex body's but mine is far more adjustable .

Maybe you should decide if you can actually conceal with a darn with a owb type rig . What I find after 32 years of CC with only two long term holsters and 15+ with the last one I can carry higher above my belt line and tighter to my body than any owb and that aids with my concealing a pistol well .

How about some friendly or not ! Honest options from family and friend that CC or at least know you do .
Tuck an empty pistol inside your belt snugged up tight and have your wife or girl , hopefully not both to watch you for a while then tell you how when it works compared to inside of pants !! Or friend that knows you CC or kids .

I always found that iwb work better for our 6 family members that CC all have done some experimenting to find what worked for them and all ended up carrying the same thing year round , IWN both hybrids and kydex . The other hybrid is a FOXX Little Hybrid that two use . My wife and I do have a couple very nice owb rigs form Nelson Holsters and Black Hills Leather
we have tried to make them work for concealed carry even swapping the holsters between us but they just don't conceal as well as our old rigs . They ended up only getting used when in the woods for the day and changed out once back to the vehicle . But that's us . No owb is as adjustable as some IWB rigs and that's the difference .

I'm not sure that shapeshift holster will be good at any "shape " but you may have to spend some money and a couple weeks to see and maybe start that box of holsters that did not work for YOU . HA There most be 50 holster companies out there that make products people like or they would not last but a year or two . Its all Trial & Error to find what each of use like !! MY first production holster was a Cross Breed . That turd lasted one hard week and was given away . Good luck

I bought the ShapeShift kit for my G23 as I wanted to have the options of IWB/OWB/AIWB. It's still young, so I can't speak to longevity yet, but seems to be decent quality. The fit on the G23 is excellent and retention is adjustable. The components that allow it to quick-change may appear to be busy and bulky, but in IWB it conceals relatively well.

AIWB - My gut prevents me from carrying something the size of a G19/23/32 in AIWB so that's not even an option for me.

IWB - It may be a little more heavy and bulky than a standard hybrid like the Cloak Tuck 3.0, which I prefer over the ShapeShift as far as comfort, but conceals about the same. For my shape, the best position is between 2:30-3:00. Not sure I like the plastic clips, I see them as a possible fail point in the future.

OWB (Belt slide) - This configuration holds the gun nice and tight to the body, and is one of the most concealable OWB holsters I've tried. It has a bit of weight to it though but not excessive, and a good belt holds it well. I'd only consider this configuration in the winter though.

OWB (Paddle) - I'd only use this for training that requires exposed OWB, and even then I really don't like the ShapeShift paddle configuration at all. It's great that the angle can be adjusted but the mount just seems a bit of a kludge to me. There is a positive retention release plunger that I find flimsy; it's removable, but that defeats the purpose.

Regarding quality, the fit on the G23 is excellent. However, I bought a shell made specifically for my SIG P229r railed .40, and the quality isn't as good. The attachment is loose, and the shape of the trigger guard shroud requires a perfect angle of insertion or else it gets hung up.

Overall the ShapeShift is a great concept, but while it attempts to do everything, it's not the best at anything. It's good, but IMHO not as good as dedicated holsters for each carry method. If you like the CloakTuck 3.0 I'd say go with that unless you really need quick-change capability.

No experience with the Cloak Tuk but I just got the Shapeshift this past Friday for my G19. This is my true 1st IWB system w retention. Cool concept w the different options for IWB and OWB.

As far as comfort, I really like it, at about the 430 position. Concealment is awesome. Doubt I will ever go back to OWB (tho I really liked my Safariland GLS, very clean no resistance on draw due to the thumb release), last 5 months been using a Tap Rack, it concealed better than the GLS but the draw was no where as clean.

Now back to the Shapeshift. My only issue w IWB that I gotta get used too is because of the half shell design and needing to make a pit stop if ya follow me. Once you unbuckle and unzip, you loose probably 80% positive retention on the gun, more or less a juggling act trying to support your pants w a loaded gun dangling on ur backside and direct your aim into the toilet lol. IMO, not good especially if you carry chambered. I like the thumb release offered on the other shell half, but that’s only good for OWB. I might rig up a Velcro strap for a emergency pit stop to be deployed when needed. But even at the house carrying, I only want to holster once and clear the holster at night. For now, just gonna take some getting used too.

I'm also considering the Shape Shifter for a different reason than has been discussed. To me, the biggest downfall of Hybrids is the trigger guard. For safety sake, I want the kydex (or in AG's version, polymer) to completely sandwich the trigger guard, top and bottom. The only two hybrid holsters I've seen that do this are Black Arch and the ShapeShifter. All other hybrids (including the AG Cloak Tuck) I'm aware of just affix the outer, one sided, kydex to the leather backer. This has two possible consequences; bad-you lose retention because it's only held from one side, and really bad-the leather backer could conform enough to actually engage the trigger when re-holstering.
I prefer the build quality of the Black Arch but it's about 2x the price of the Alien Gear.
