Hello all, I hope this is the appropriate area for this thread...?

I have been carrying for a few years now and started with a G26. I am 5'10 175 lbs. I tried carrying the 26 at 4:00 for a year and just couldn't do it comfortably. I had to tighten the belt quite a bit so my pants wouldn't drop and just could never get used to it. So i sold it and bought a sig sauer p238... great little gun... don't really even know its there.. but its just too little. I got a chance to attempt AIWB at a gun shop the other day and couldn't believe how comfortable it felt even with a G17.... my hands are fairly lanky and i could never get used to the 26 or the p238 so i think i am going to make the leap into appendix carry and go with a 17 or 19.... i am just having a hard time deciding. The differences are minor on paper but may feel greater from day to day. Now that i have felt the grip on the 17 the 19 feels questionably small lol. I normally wear medium t-shirts in the summer and i realize i will have to make some slight changes. Can i conceal a G17 AIWB in the summer? There isn't to much info that i could find about concealing a G17 in the first place let alone in the controversial appendix area. I am so set on this i already have a MIC and clipdraw on the way as well as a Phlster Access to try two different systems to start..... both will fit a 17 or 19...

I am hoping someone with experience carrying both of these pistols AIWB can shed some light and maybe sway my decision.

Thank you.

My average Monday through Friday consists of a 15 min ride to work where i have to leave my gun locked in the car (No weapons policy) and 15 min home. Winter is pretty dreary and boring in NY in the summer I am an avid motorcyclist. I couldn't carry 4:00 on my bike and i don't think i would try 1:00 or 2:00.. maybe shoulder rig. As for an average day in the summer i feel like i am not really sitting down unless i am at home. So maybe i just kind of answered my own question? Only concerned about printing in a t shirt at this point. Maybe its just something i need to try.

First off, screw that clip draw idea IMO. The bigger the gun the more uncomfortable it will be to appendix carry. My honest opinion would be a good hybrid holster like a super tuck or Theis and a good belt if the Walmart ones don't work for you.

As for 17 or 19 tough call, I sold my 19 to get a 17 and I'm a happy camper. More so what feels better in your hand.

A super tuck for AIWB? I do have a nice 5.11 belt already. Do you appendix carry a G17?

I would think appendix carry with a G17 would be pretty uncomfortable. I have been carrying a G17 Gen 4 in a N82 Tactical Professional IWB holster for the last year and it is very comfortable with no issues. I wear it on the left side at about 8 o'clock.

I am 6'1 225 and I appendix carry every day. I believe appendix carry is not for everyone. It actually isn't for most people, but I believe appendix carry is superior in speed and concealability. Anyone who says it is stupid or unsafe is ignorant or simply misinformed.

I can conceal a 19 easier than a 17 and it is more comfortable because of the shorter slide. While I can grab my 17, I normally always go for the 19.

I wouldn't recommend a MIC holster or Clip Draw. A Clip Draw is very unsafe because it doesn't cover the trigger guard and I don't trust a MIC for appendix carry because it has no belt attachment. If you want to go for the minimalist style, get a Raven Concealment Vanguard 2. Otherwise, for a very small amount of added bulk, the Phlster holsters, Incog Gcode, and other similar Kydex holsters are excellent.

Good luck!

I find my 19 to be more comfortable than my 22 (same size as 17). If I carry them in the same holster I find the extra length and weight at the end to be a bit uncomfortable. The 19, even in the same length holster, is just more comfortable not having that extra slide length down there. I know it sounds weird, but it's true. I'd recommend the 19. You still have a fighting size pistol with 15+1 rounds that, in my opinion, is easier to carry and conceal.

I use a JM Custom The George holster. I'd recommend looking into them JM Custom makes great holsters.

I really appreciate all the info!
Ya I would never use the clip draw without the mic and vice versa. (essentially the same thing as a VG2) When my phlster access holster gets here Monday I am going to go back to the gun shop and give the 19 and 17 a better test. I am thinking I will find the 19 is probably the better option as most of you have stated

With a proper gunbelt, you don't have to over tighten yur belt. Mic and clipdraw are in no way adequate for carry, but can be okay for a drawer. The 19 will conceal a bit easier. Either gun is easy to conceal with a proper gunbelt and a quality holster, inside the waistband or outside. Don't waste time and money on gimmicks instead of holsters. The glock sport holster is a great place to start and is less than $20. Good luck.

Yea the clipdraw and MIC definitely appear to be a little too simple but they were cheap. Are you saying they wont hold up because i could see that. Its more the shape of my butt and hips that dont hold the gun up so well with added weight in that area. For whatever reason carrying appendix doesn't have that same effect. I would love to carry OWB but in the summer there is no way for me to get away with it. In the winter? sure. Ill have to look up this sport holster you speak of.

The mic and clipdraw will last forever. They just don't perform any of the primary functions of a holster. An actual holster keeps the gun in the same position at the same angle, regardless of body position or activity, so it's right where it's supposed to be when you reach for it. A holster also provides a firm platform for the gun, allowing you to get a good combat grip prior to drawing.

As someone who has AIWB carried a Glock for 4 years, my advice would be to return/sell that stuff you bought. Get a good belt (Volund Gearworks or Wilderness can be had reasonably) and order a true dedicated AIWB from a someone that put some thought/trial and error into the design to ensure the holster actually tuck's the butt of the gun in for concealment. Stay AWAY from the hybrid recommendation. Look into JM Custom, Custom Carry Concepts and Dark Star Gear. These guy's make the best kydex AIWB holsters that will actually conceal the gun. Whether you go with a 19 or 17 I would suggest ordering the holster in G17 length, the extra length will help keep thing's stable, it won't get in the way. I occasionally carry a Gen4 G17, but my main carry gun (meaning carried AIWB atleast 6 days a week) is a Gen4 G17 that CBC chopped to G19 length, carried in a JM Custom AIWB.

I have a 23, the same size as a 19, and a 17. I carry IWB appendix often and for many years. What has worked well is a cheaper leather Galco IWB holster and a Wildeness belt. The 17 feels better in the hand but the 23 feels better in the holster. I can carry the 17 but the 23 feels much better. The 17 just sticks out a little too far in all directions.

up1911fan,
I truly appreciate the blunt honesty. Can I ask what belt and holster you use? Do you use the clip style attachment vs the loops? Do you find yourself switching it up holster/belt? In the summer can you carry the non-chopped 17 and get away with it in a normal fitting t-shirt and shorts?

just opened my eyes and saw the lase sentence on the JM

My guess would be it would be easier and more comfortable to carry the G26 with a good holster and belt than the G17 with a marginal belt.

Agreed, but from my experience a glock 17 AIWB is more comfortable to me than a g26 on the hip.... or anything on my hip really.

A G26 would be more comfortable AIWB than a 17 yes but i am not a fan of the small grip.

I appendix carry a G26, and have found the most comfortable, versatile, and concealable way is with only the very end of the barrel under the belt, and the grip projecting as if it were in a shoulder holster. This allows seatbelts, sitting, all the up and down movements with no binding or barrel digging into my side. I'm a leftie and carry at about 2:00 position, find with the cell phone case just below and beside it it breaks up any printing quite well.

I would think a 19 carried like this would be right on the edge of comfort, and a 17 would be too long. The only way to make the 17 work would be to have the barrel below the belt line, and just can't get used to that for practical carry.
