Adding velcro to a duty belt

My dept. issues us Sam Browne duty belts without any Velcro on it. I was looking to add my own velcro to it, but wanted to see if anyone else has done this and / or what would work best.

Correct, on the inside of the duty belt. I can't use the belt you suggest, have to keep this belt. I wanted to try adding velcro to it before I purchased a new one.

I have never heard of anyone adding Velcro to a duty belt that does not have it. My suggestion would be to find a belt that looks the same as what you are issued and buy it. As long as you don't have inspections, no one should pick it up. Of course, you should only do this if you are off probation and it won't cause you a serious headache if someone notices it.

No reason that a properly equipped leather goods shop/craftsman couldn't sew a 2" strip of Velcro to your belt. Adding a Velcro trouser belt would give you the function you want. Sewing will add additional holes, but if there is already stitching for a lining, the same holes could be used to not change appearance.

If the inside is smooth leather lined, just clean it thoroughly (don't use Windex or other solvent based cleaners because that will degrade the glue), and use the industrial strength velcro tape that comes in various sizes, including 2" width, and call it a day. As long as you let it bond properly and don't go around ripping it off at end of shift and just remove it judiciously and slowly, it should work for your purposes.

My dept issues us the velcro lined belts with a velcro inner belt. I absolutely hate it. I find that the velcro wears out rather quickly. I just wear a rigger's belt underneath and add belt keepers.

Thanks all for the sound advice. I'm going to try and add some myself hopefully this weekend. My old dept. we had duty belts with the Velcro, and I actually liked it. IMO it holds the belt "evenly", giving a slightly better appearance.

I'm with you, itsnitro. I used a Safariland nylon rig that was velcro lined up until recently, and I LOVE the way it holds things in place, in addition to keepers. Good luck with the project!

Yeah, any place that re-soles boots will have heavy enough sewing equipment to sew through the belt leather. I've taken leather duty gear items to a re-soling place to have them repaired.
