Yes, very true, and the prevailing wisdom is we no longer have to practice because we are issued 9mms now.

Yes, shooting is a perishable skill. When practicing shot placement should be emphasized above all else, but when it comes to terminal ballistics the 9mm just does not do it for me.
That’s all fine and dandy, but I have zero clue why that matters to you on the range.

Shooting 9mm isn’t challenging enough I guess.

I think the gun industry pushes the heck out of the 9mm to keep up sales. A lot of minimally interested shooters buying firearms. I don’t trust the FBI conclusions since they have a budget issue that is incessant and the corruption of their lies and omissions over the past 40 years. Finally, 21 years in the Army, Combat veteran, multiple deployments and now civilian. I’d rather have a .40 or .45 if I don’t have a carbine handy. Some people like asparagus, some people like broccoli, some people like anything except 9mm, .380, .38 and such.
Yeah, but I’m not referring to defensive shooting.

There's nothing the 9mm does better than other calibers I use and reload.

I don't have any 'range guns' whatever that is. I enjoy shooting all of them; but they were acquired for purposes other than recreational shooting.

Finally, shoot whatever you want. We can be pals so long as you're not an asshat about it.

Getting bent out of shape over things that don’t affect you personally has become a national sport. I blame the Facebook.
How am I “bent out of shape?” It’s a forum. It’s an entertaining discussion. It’s gone over 100 posts in 24 hours.

By the way, other than forums, I use absolutely ZERO social media. I don’t even have a FB account.

95%+ of my guns were acquired for collecting purposes and recreation. I also shoot a couple matches a month.

But you’re right, the round itself doesn’t really do anything much different than the next. The guns designed for it do though. Way, WAY more research and development spent on 9mm compared to the others.

I like nine millimeter just fine, and it doesn’t concern me that development of new platforms focuses primarily on it. That said, I love others more, particularly .45ACP and 10mm.

I have a ton of 9mm handguns. More of that single caliber than any other, even my beloved .45. It's cheap to load for, and shoot.
I just don't trust it to get the job done for a defensive round is all, and when I opt for that in a pocket sized gun. I tend to go for a heavy +p 147 grain load.

How do you propose to "take advantage of the R&D"?
Yes and I'm not certain "way more money has been spent on R&D concerning 9mm". You have proof/documentation of this claim op? Maybe powders, bullet engineering, and manufacturing (all of which apply to all calibers) but the 9mm? Spent more on it? Maybe you have? It's been around forever and a well known quantity. Dubious.

Not you. You’re not bent out of shape at all. I was referring to those displaying irrational anger or umbrage at inconsequential matters that don’t affect them personally. Like getting worked up about what other folks choose to shoot or not.

“I’ll never use a woman cartridge”
“9mm is for pansies.”
“The only caliber is God’s caliber.” (Which varies depending upon caliber religion)

That sort of thing.

Seems folks enjoy getting their hackles up nowadays. Social media seems to encourage it.

You just asked a question. Commie bastard.

And all the other service calibers have benefited equally from that research and development.

No it isn’t…when I shoot a 9mm I feel like it isn’t even a real handgun. Takes +P or +P+ ammo to make it feel close to right. For me the .40 or the .45 is right.

The OP keeps talking about range this, range that. You should shoot what you carry and carry what you shoot, including using full power cartridges and ammunition. For me the range is training for real life, not recreation. With no disrespect to anyone, sometimes it is hard to relate to folks that shoot for a hobby or to get likes on facebook.
