Hi Folks,

I have been pretty happy with the Buffalo Bore Woodsman loads that my wife carries in her 9mm for camping in black bear country and how well they penetrate, and I am wanting to load up a similar bullet in my .357 Sig. Now the 125gr FMJs made for .357 Sig have a REALLY wide flat point, and seeing that I push them over 1,500 fps from my stock Glock 31, I think they are probably pretty decent bear medicine, but I want to experiment on some penetration tests with some 147-grainers in that caliber. I have worked up loads for the Speer 147gr flat point TMJ that give me about 1,350 fps, but I want to find a bullet with wider flat point than the Speers have, which is tiny.

From looking at pictures of loaded ammo, it looks like Winchester, Fiocchi, and Magtech have pretty wide flat noses, but I was hoping someone had some experience with these.

Also, it's hard to find all of them in loadable components. The bullet that Federal loads in the American Eagle 147s for 9mm has a very wide flat point, but they don't offer that as a component.

Thanks!

The last few boxes of AE ammo I have shot, looked like Berry's plated bullets. Berry's sells a .355 147gr FP, but it is only rated for 1250fps. They offer a 124gr FP that is thick plated and rated for 1500fps for use in 357 SIG.

I am unfamiliar with anyone who offers a jacketed FP in 147gr. I think many of the jacketed manufacturers shy away from that profile in 147gr as it ends up being like a TC and has a long bearing surface, which can make it problematic loading for 9mm.

SNS Casting offers a no lube groove 147gr FP in their coated line. Not sure how they will hold up to 357SIG velocities.

Just load up with the Sellier & Bellot 357 Sig 140gr FMJ. This round should give plenty of penetration with the 1300 fps velocity that you should get in a G31. Or go to the Underwood Ammo site and check out their 115 gr 357 Sig XP round which offers 1500 fps velocity, 575 ft/lbs of energy and is designed to penetrate. The XP is becoming a popular woods round.
