I'm looking to practice with a 22lr in an AR platform.

Should I get a 22lr conversion kit, buy an AR that specifically shoots 22lr, or can I just get a complete upper?

If not a whole new set up, what would be compatible to a Colt LE6920 223/556 bone stock?

I have a spikes upper that I think has long been discontinued. I don't use it much anymore but it always works when I do. Luckily I bought a couple dozen mags when I first got it.

I guess from that experience my suggestion would be get a complete upper if you already have AR rifles.

But then again if you can get a complete rifle for about the same price as an upper and mags then maybe I'd do that🤷‍♂️

I have no experience with conversion kits.

I just realized I'm not help🤣

I know there are drawbacks to the conversions, but I still got one. Reliability has been OK so far. Accuracy isn't really an issue within 25 yards (where I do 99.999% of my shooting, not an exaggeration). The only thing I really don't like is that it doesn't have last round bolt hold open. Oh, and you really do need to put a few rounds of 5.56 through it when you're done to clear out the gas port - I can attest to that. If those drawbacks are too much, don't get a conversion.

I like the CMMG conversion. Easy to drop in, I don’t care about last round hold-open. It’s reliable and accurate enough for me. YMMV.

I guess it probably depends on how much you think you'll shoot it. I've purchased some .22LR conversions in the past, and have had decent luck. At the time that I bought the conversions, .22LR versions of the firearms that I got the conversion kits for didn't exist. When a .22LR version of what you want does exist, my experience has been that I've preferred it over the conversion kit. I've ended up selling off the conversion kits. While swapping uppers / magazines isn't really a big deal, if you shoot it regularly you'll probably get tired of it.

The only reason to get the conversion kit is so the weight, ergo’s, sights, lights are identical for practice.

I have the CMMG conversion kit and it performs well for me…..BUT ( I strongly echo what others have already said) I reach for my S&W 15-22 eighty percent of the time.
You will never regret getting a 15-22. Put a little suppressor on it and it’s about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.
