Geez. I thought that as a firearm related discussion forum there would be praise for the multitudes of choices that become available to us in this country regarding both firearm and ammunition types, but instead, many of the responses in this thread read like they've been penned by a group of 6th grade spoiled brats.

I wish it weren't so, but I do "get it", as most consider rimfire cartridges to be inferior to centerfire for everything including self defense. Well, .22LR is not what is normally considered or chosen for self defense, but neither is .50BMG; all things have a purpose, with some falling into the multi-purpose role, and those that are - are all chosen within reason. Would I chose .22LR for concealed carry/self defense purposes? Or to take a deer at 500 yards? No, but I've carried a .22 as back up; it can be used for such purposes either due to current need ("I sent my 9mm Glock off to the Mothership, and this .22 is all I got..."), or perhaps an individual's physical limitations ("At 74 years old my hand strength is weak and this .22 is the only thing I can hold onto while I shoot...").

Instead of putting down things that one might have **no current use or purpose for, I think we should still be grateful and consider ourselves fortunate to have as many choices as we do.

**In the past I never had use for anything chambered in .22LR - that was until later on in life when I became afflicted with severe RA; now .22LR suppressed is all I shoot, which I'm very grateful to have at my disposal.

I’m glad CCI is working on .22 LR in an attempt to optimize it for defense out of a short pistol barrel - to make the best of a relatively weak defensive cartridge. I’m impressed with the expansion; I just don’t think this one is “The Answer” due to the somewhat lackluster penetration. I’d love to see if they can tweak it a bit.

I have no problem putting >1,000# cattle down with plain ole round nose rimfire with a single shot. The only times I have ever seen issues with 22 not getting the job done was due to lack of penetration, so that is the last thing I would give up.

Over the last three or so decades people have fallen for the hype of expansion and convinced themselves that it is the end all be all… “But my YouToob jello tests!” When in reality it is literally the least important factor. All one has to do is spend some time handgun (and rimfire) hunting to see for themselves what matters the most.

Practice, placement, and penetration trumps expansion each and every time when it comes to handguns and rimfire.

I'll pick up a box or two when and if I see it. I'll run it through my most likely to be used back up, LCP II in .22lr. Well see how it shoots.

I did try the Punch ammo. I don't remember if it was 7 or 10 yards but I was shooting CCI mini mags solids to point of aim on the target all in a 2 1/2-3 inch circle on the bullseye. The Punch all shot a hands width down from the bullseye, shot the box of 50 round circle of hits was a little bit larger. I've painted the sights on the LCP--certainly helps with range shooting.

Shot stingers out of the LCP and there was a lot of flash--don't recall accuracy. This was before I painted the sights.

I would tend to think the heavier mini mag would be a better choice but what do I know-perhaps this new ammo is a good option.

My wife has trouble with her hands and .22 LR is her only option for a pistol these days.
Her go-to .22 is a Ruger SR22 as she can operate it and shoot it without pain.
These new CCI loads may increase the defensive power, somewhat, of her little Ruger should she ever have to use it that way. Which I hope will never be necessary.

I'm always amused when people bad mouth being shot with a 22 caliber round. Have you given any thought to being stabbed with a Philips head screwdriver, now how about one that is traveling at 900 feet per second.
I believe it would hurt like a ***** and change the attitude of 90% of people that were shot with one, and now there are a number of manufacturers putting out rounds that expand ALSO.
I'll admit, I do generally carry a Hellcat or Shield plus but the times I'm forced to carry my NAA Pug loaded with Punch ammo I don't feel under armed.

Meh...

CCI Uppercut = inadequate penetration.

Federal 29gr Punch is a better choice. Punch doesn't expand but it reliably achieves adequate penetration (12-inches plus) from the same size pistols as CCI Uppercut is intended for. Adequate penetration is far more important than expansion.

.22LR has a niche in personal defense.

I have been controlling some varmints in our yard with CCI suppressor 45g at 970fps out of a CZ bolt rifle with a can and find the penetration wonderful but the run offs have been more than I like. I also tried the CCI Quiet 40ga and 710fps and found that neither penetration nor velocity was getting the job done.

I want to get a subsonic round through a can with greater expansion and adequate speed and perhaps this Upper cut with 32g at 950fps might meet the need with a much-improved bullet type and what looks like great expansion. I think it will be interesting to chrono the speed of this to see what it shows when shot through a rifle. I think it's worth a couple of boxes when it becomes available.

pit will be very high velocity ( the 22 plinkster video I reviewed said something in the territory of 1600 fps.) way into supersonic territory mitigating the can to a great degree.
I would have you consider the CCI segmented subsonic HP or Eley subsonicHP
even good old fashion CCI standard ( standard velocity is essentially a synonym for sub sonic- almost all standard velocity target ammo is in the subsonic range- when cans became so popular companies started using the trendy subsonic labeling to make sales! ) in many cases a brands subsonic solid 40 grain ammo is exactly the same as their standard velocity target ammo in a different box!
with the high quality European ammo, you tend to get significantly better accuracy ( once you find the ammo your gun shoots best- for a CZ I would suggest SK or Lapua) and improving precision shot placement can often make a bigger difference in getting a quick kill than more power
