On Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, Battalion Chief Christopher Eddy
responded to a tractor trailer fire on Georgia Route 15. When he
opened the truck door, an explosion occurred killing him instantly. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.

On Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, while Firefighter Darrell Helton was helping to shuttle water during a mutual aid call for a structure fire, he told a fellow firefighter that he was experiencing a flutter in his chest but that he was fine. After delivering the last load of water, Firefighter Helton sat down to rest but then collapsed and fell face first to the ground. CPR was initiated and Firefighter Helton was transported to a local hospital where despite resuscitation attempts, he was pronounced deceased.

On September 12, 2024, Captain Thomas Patterson responded to two
emergency calls. The first response was at 1:12 p.m. to a vehicle collision.
The second response was at 2:30 p.m. to a fire alarm activation. After
the responses, Captain Patterson returned home where, at approximately
3:25 p.m., he was found unresponsive and passed away.

medical emergency during a fire department training exercise. He was immediately
transported to the North Kansas City Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

downed powerline that was on fire. When he was leaving the incident a tree fell on
the cab of his fire department pickup truck, killing him instantly.

On Sunday, June 19, 2016, Firefighter Jason Gould was rescuing a woman from an
apartment fire when his mask was knocked off. When his mask became dislodged, he
took in a large amount of smoke and suffered lung damage. After his retirement in 2023,
Firefighter Gould received two lung transplants. On Sunday, September 8, 2024, he
passed away due to complications from another lung procedure, directly related
to the incident that occurred in June of 2016.

On Friday, September 27, 2024, Battalion Chief Tony Ray Garrison
was assisting in the rescue of victims of a landslide during the response to Hurricane Helene, when a second landslide
occurred. He passed away from the injuries sustained in this
incident. Battalion Chief Garrison also served with the Garren
Creek Fire Department.

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, Assistant Chief Scott Glass responded to a
residential fire. As members were setting up a water supply a vehicle ran over
the hose popping a coupling, causing 3 firefighters to fall to the ground.
Assistant Chief Glass sustained serious head injuries and was airlifted to
Northwest Texas Healthcare System in Amarillo. He passed away on
Sunday, October 20, 2024.

On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, Engineer Robert “Sharky” Sharkevich, Sr., was
battling a brush fire on Lamentation Mountain in Berlin, CT, when the Utility
Terrain Vehicle (UTV) he was operating rolled over a steep, rocky incline. He
was pronounced deceased at the scene. Three other firefighters were taken
to local hospitals with non life-threatening injuries.

On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Fire Captain Garret Miller was on duty at Fire
Station 366 when he suffered a medical emergency. He was immediately
transported to the hospital where he remained for two weeks until his passing
from a cardiovascular event.

On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, firefighters were at the scene of a commercial structure
fire. At approximately 11:05 p.m. a mayday was transmitted for a wall collapse. Firefighter
Marcelo Garcia and another firefighter were immediately rescued and transported to the
Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Firefighter Garcia passed away from the
injuries he sustained in the collapse. The other firefighter has since been released.

house fire when he collapsed. He was immediately transported to the hospital where
he passed away. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, starting at 5:33 pm., Assistant Chief Stephen Michael
Pavetti responded to multiple calls for trees and wires down, with the last call at 8:03 p.m.
After the calls were completed, Assistant Chief Pavetti and others from the department returned
to the station, cleaned the apparatus, and put it back in service. They then had dinner together
at the station. At approximately 3:30 p.m. the next day, Thursday, November 21, 2024,
Assistant Chief Pavetti was found unresponsive at his home where he was pronounced
deceased from a cardiac event.

On Friday, November 22, 2024, Firefighter Johnny Alvin Goines responded to an emergency
call made at 10:46 p.m. reporting a motor vehicle accident. A second emergency call was
made at 11:05 p.m. reporting a vehicle in a ditch. Verona Volunteer Fire Department and
Onslow County Emergency Medical Services responded to the second call and found
Firefighter Goines unresponsive inside of his vehicle. He was returning home from the
first call when he was found. Firefighter Goines was immediately transported to the
hospital where he was pronounced deceased in the early morning hours of Saturday,
November 23, 2024. The cause of his death has yet to be determined.

On Thursday, November 21, 2024, Captain Henry Sardina, III was leading an in-station
drill when he suffered an apparent heart attack. He went unresponsive, CPR was
immediately performed, and he was revived. He was then transported to the hospital
but suffered additional complications and cardiac emergencies in the days that
followed. He passed away while still hospitalized on Sunday, November 24, 2024.

On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, Chief Robert “Bob” Chandler was teaching a class when he began to feel ill. Colleagues did a patient medical assessment and obtained a base set of vitals; everything was within normal limits. The next day, Wednesday, November 27, 2024, Chief Chandler was found deceased in his quarters from a cardiovascular emergency.

On Tuesday, December 3, 2024, Firefighter Ralph Meyer responded to the scene of a structure fire. He then returned home. The next morning, Wednesday, December 4, 2024, he suffered a heart attack and was immediately transported to the local hospital where he passed away. Firefighter Meyer previously served as the fire chief and his son is currently the Chief.

On Thursday, December 12, 2024, Firefighter Richard “Rick” Sanders responded to a two-story residential structure fire. While operating at the scene, Firefighter Sanders began not feeling well. He was immediately taken to an ambulance, where he collapsed into cardiac arrest. He was then transported to St. Vincent Ascension Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
