If I want to dress up my 1911 a bit, what are some nice grips and some good grip manufacturers?

A custom set is cool. You can have some made based on your job, military service, hobby, whatever. These were made for me by Michael King of www.flashdancedesigns.com. They are one of a kind; I have the only set like these there is. Mike helped me pick the engraved US flag background, the wood, (Brazilian Rosewood), and color. I gave him the basic idea of what I wanted and he came up with these. The USMC Eagle, Globe and Anchor on the right grip and my Gold Jump Wings and Scuba Diver insignia on the left. I spent 21+ years as a US Marine and the 1911 served me very well. I'm proud of my time in the Corps and this seemed like a cool way to dress up my Stainless Ruger SR1911 Commander. I have another set being made in ebony with the actual Insignia themselves being inlaid in the wood for my Colt Commander. I'll post those pics when they get here.

Esmeralda Grips are pretty and well made BUT they are slightly thicker than standard. Better for those with big hands, not so great for those with smaller hands.
I bought the slim grips for mine, and they're reasonably slim. Haven't gotten the "standard" grips. Good to know.

If you set the Esmeralda grips right next to a standard dimension M1911 grip, the total thickness at the widest portion is about the same.

The difference comes in the sloping fore and aft. Esmeralda grips don't slope as much as the standard grips, so it feels thicker in the hand.
