This was one of my late father's rifles. It's a Sako, apparently, and is a beautiful little rifle in a caliber I have never heard of.

.17 x 222

From what I've found on the internet, it is a very rare wildcat caliber and one needs to reload for it. No problem, except I can't find any of the brass or die set or data that you need. Hopefully some of the ammo or brass will turn up in father's things, but all I've found so far is .17 HMR, .17 Javelin, and .222 Rem Mag.

Neat little rifle. Would hate to sell it before I can shoot it...

You can contact RCBS and they can make dies for you. Sounds like a .222 Remington necked down to .17 caliber.
That's what it is, a 17/222. to my knowledge nobody ever made loaded ammo for it, but you might be able to find pre-formed brass for it.

Otherwise, rather than necking down 222 brass to 17, it would be easier to use a 17 Remington sizing die and push the shoulder back on 17 Remington case to 222 shoulder dimensions and then trim the case to length. You might want to anneal the case necks and shoulders first and use Imperial sizing die wax for best results.

This is similar to what I used to do when making brass for my 350 Remington magnum. The 350 mag ais a belted magnum case similar to cases like the 300 mag, 338 mag, and 7mm Rem mag but shortened from 30-06 length to 308 length. I had cases that I used many times with jsut about every belted magnum cas even including 375 H&H and I never useed any forning dies, just a collection of differnt caliber dies that I had, some that I even cut down to use as neck size only dies.

17 Remington brass is not hard to find.

AND! a quick google search turned this up:

Good info from folks who have formed this brass:

Rebarrel to 204 ruger its zippy as well.

Not to derail the thread, but I'm set to inherit a .219 Zipper from an uncle and I'm going to have the same problem. Fortunately, Hendershot's is still making the custom cartridge. They also develop custom loads for rifles so you might check with them. Perhaps they could help you.

I spoke with a gunsmith friend , he said have a local smith look at it , a 17 remmington reamer "may" be able to rechamber it for 17 rem.
