A "subcompact" is a version of a full-sized pistol that has been shortened in slide and grip even more than the "compact" version. It retains the width of the base pistol and can use the same magazines.

A "micro" pistol is designed around a slim magazine to be as short, thin and light as possible without concern for parts compatibility with a full-sized pistol.

There are pistols that don't fit either definition, e.g. the Canik MC9.

His point of whatever you shoot best is spot on, imo! I sold several micros because I shoot and like the feel of subcompact and compact handguns the best.

These a great times for gun owners because we have many options. However, I would like to see more Da/Sa options in the subcompact size.

I have pistols like the Beretta 950BS in .25 ACP and my LCP II in .380 ACP. I think of them as micro. Pistols like my Sig P365, Kahr PM9, S&W 442 as sub compact, and pistols of similar size to the G19 (like a 1911 Commander) to be compacts. Not sure if that's the view across the board but that's how I see it. These are all pistols I own or have owned (I sold my Kimber CDP compact .45 ACP to a buddy a few years ago).

I would like to add that subcompacts work better with (and are available with…) higher energy cartridges. If I use a +0 magazine extension, my G33 is easy to control despite the .357’s high velocity and sharp recoil.

I still use my 9x19 KelTec P11. I bought it in the mid-nineties. 14 ounces, 10 round magazine, 9# DAO trigger…and it accepts 15 round S&W M59 magazines. I even got the tritium sights for it. They’re long dimmed, but still nice steel 3-dot sights. Admittedly, it must be used with standard pressure 9mm, but that little dude was way ahead of its time.

Owned a Glock 43 for a couple of years and never really cared for it on the range. It was too small in my hands and my scores suffered as a result. Got rid of it and still have my 26 with whichI am dead nuts accurate. So yes, in my opinion, pistols can be too small to be effective.

I EDC a WCV Gen 5 19 - every day, all year long. (I do switch out OWB to IWB holsters during the Summer or when I need/want a little more concealment though.)

Good to have options, and there are lots of good options today, but just make mine a "non-micro" please.

KT should really make a striker fired version of the P11 with a decent trigger. I got two and they are very reliable,

I bought the Shield Plus when it first came out, went to buy a G43, but was sold on the Shield when I held it. Got a nice holster and carried it for about 3 months. Went back to the gun store a few times and saw an unfired sig365 being sold as used for a great price. Held and really liked it, put down and went home. I kept looking at the size comparison on Handgun Hero, went back the next day and bought it. I’ve been carrying it ever since. I shoot it as good as the Shield and it is completely invisible IWB. I’m a skinny guy and unless I wear oversized flannel shirts the Shield’s grip sticks out like a tumor. The 365 has a shorter grip so it’s easier for me to conceal…
I know it’s not for everyone but you big guys can choose your own gun😉

The hammer-fired P11 has a double strike capability in case of a hard primer. Also, Kel-Tec offered a revised trigger spring that reduced trigger pull to about 9 lbs. It is very capable out to 15 yards and is a great deal more powerful than a .38 or .380…even with standard pressure ammunition. Concealment is comfortable and discreet. The trigger pull is long and somewhat stout and the hammer may be covered during reholstering, making carry a little safer.

Kelgren has made some really fascinating contributions. That gun and the P3AT. The S2000 folding rifle. Pretty incredible design and material work from him! We all know they are not manufactured to the highest level of quality (they offer them at a super-low price point), but I do give him a lot of credit for his ideas and execution!
