I forget what buffer i run with my AR9 but the built one has something like 8oz and my upcoming build has a 7.50z. Something like that. I bought a KAW valley buffer and it was the cheapest i could find for a heavy buffer. I can check for sure the actual weights when i get home as im at work now.

Great to know, I like those cheap, home made solutions :D
In fact, that would be better than a heavier buffer, but the linked article is light on tech data, like why and when this would be needed.

Great build! Looks like tons of fun. I have heard the heavier tungsten buffers are where it's at on AR 9s. I have a box of parts for an AR9 nine build : KAK shockwave, LPK, UPK, Rail, sights, 3 Glock 18 mags. You just sped up the process on getting mine built.
Thanks for getting my priorities straight ; )
NICE! Get To It! ;)

3.5oz is really light for the blow back 9mm. My Lone Wolf has a 5.5oz all steel buffer and it runs great. You might get there with an H3 (three tungsten weights) carbine buffer. Good luck.
Thanks for that datapoint! If the quarter-spacer trick works, I'd prefer that, as it is lighter and I can do it ASAP. But blowback dynamics are not quite that simple, IDK if stronger springs offsets lighter buffer exactly like that. I know the mass of the bolt and buffer combined will delay the pressure release on the chamber if it is heavier, more than extra spring tension, which is much greater when the spring is compressed than at rest. Hmmm... Both may be needed, but heavier buffer might give a few more FPS which is always good :D

Yes, Please! Extra build details will help also, like BCG weight (or type) and barrel length and if you run suppressed. That last one also affects cycling, some suppressed loads cannot cycle a bolt without the can actually being on the weapon.

I have some legit gun-smithy types over at my home playground "suggesting" that I should go ahead and shoot it as-is, and whilst I believe that it would be OK with 115gr standard pressure ammo, I have a vast reserve of NATO 9mm that I intend to use almost exclusively. And the NATO does hit harder, rated at least the same velocity as it's 115gr, non +P counterpart. Mostly WWB NATO, but I have some other brands too. I also intend to purchase some Underwood +P 9mm in varying weights...

More Bolt/Buffer mass will slow the reciprocating speed, and the spacers will limit travel and increase "effective" mass just a bit.

Thoughts, Please :D

With a heavy buffer you do not need the quarters. Also a heavy buffer springs aid in this too. Basically the heavy buffer and heavy spring hold the fired case in the barrel longer so there is less powder dirtying the chamber area and preventing too much force pushing the buffer backward.

Below is a buffer I have for my glock build unused. And the one I use for my colt build is heavier and runs well so far. I have had some issues that take some tweaking. My biggest issue was from a PSA mag block. I wasted much time and money to find out the mag block was the culprit to my issues.

Yeah, that KVP would not, dare I say Could Not, use the spacers. It has the thicker pad in front of the spring, which preloads it. Not a bad price, I saw some for $60 and said YUK! $35, free shipping. Cool!
Thanks CB, I suspect you have a lot more to say, I'll pm you ASAP

This pistol caliber carbine thing is really getting to be an itch I want to scratch.

Mind sharing the costs of the components?

I waited for PSA's daily deals to build mine. Got the stripped lower for $99, a parts kit for $40, and a pistol buffer kit (came with the Shockwave brace). Bmgot the complete upper for $359.

If i did it again i would wait for a complete lower to go on sale.

Let's see, the upper was $350, the lower was $100 I had the LPK, but I believe it was $30. Shockwave and KAK tube ran me $50 iirc... used a carbine buffer and spring I had that was a take-off from a stock change.

I guess I got about $600 in it, WELL WORTH the Price...
Better than an "unobtanium" Sub-2000 glocker, IMO.
I have at least 1 RDS for it and flip-ups, ready to rock!

PSA Glock Mag lower, which makes for an abbreviated lower build process, no bolt release or mag release (that is already on there). Took about 1/2 an hour, 45 minutes, tops. Complete upper, so I just slapped it on. I still need a 3.5oz, 9mm pistol buffer, mine weighs in at 2.9oz which is a standard 5.56 weight. Might check and see if something heavier is preferable, I will be shooting NATO 9mm almost exclusively. 10.5" barrel.

Pretty pleased with it, the cheap LPK is fine, except the detents in the pivot and takedown pins are a bit stiff. Getting smoother already, I oiled, and worked them a few times. The drum (Korean) do not lock in, but I think I can make that work. Need to check them in the G34 to see if it is the drum or the AR9 catch, but the Korean Happy Stick fits fine.
It cost me a bit more than an "unobtanium" Glock Mag Sub-2000, and it's a much better weapon to boot! It breaks down and fits in my "Pelican-Like" 4 Pistol Case, which makes ne Very Happy! :D

I LOVE IT!!!
Congrats are in order, looks great and glade everything came together for you.
