I have been there alot years ago and it was always nice. Have not gone there in 16 years. I don't know if there are bears and mountain lions there but I'd feel better with a gun on me anyway. I have a Penn. permit and wanted to get opinions as to which gun you would carry. The choices are...
P3at with Buffalo Bore 100gr hard cast
PF9 (suggest 9mm ammo)
7 round 2" 357 (which ammo)
G26
G17
xdm 45 cal (ammo choice)
5 round 6" 454 revolver

We would be there during the week so the campground and trails might not be crowded and I'd want something if a critter came out of the woods and tried to get one of the kids.

Why only 1 gun?

If only 1 from your list either of the revolvers, you would more likely carry the .357.

The .454 and the .357 as a BUG.

You could probably get away with a pea shooter at Devils Lake. It's usually so crowded that most animals stay away. If you're more comfortable with a pistol, a 9mm would take care of 99.9% of your animal encounters.

I've been to Devil's Lake a lot. Used to be that there was more of a 2-legged animal problem than anything else. If I were you I'd bring your EDC pistol and call it good. The 454 is not necessary.

-edit-I moved to Colorado from Wisconsin. That was obvious to me but wouldn't be to anyone else....sorry.

Still very true. Mostly the drunk and stupid, but pretty much harmless variety of 2-legged people.

Yeah I'm pretty sure you really only have to worry about the 2 legged kinda animal in Devils Lake. I would leave the 454 at home.

But wait....What about....THE DEVILS?:wow: You better be packing some special gun, and maybe take your Bible too.

I grew up in WI, went to school at UW Madison, and spent a lot of days at that place. Have some hunting land not far from there. No bears there, no mountain lions. Madison has gotten exponentially more liberal than when I was there, so whatever you pack, conceal it. Some bearded, skinny jeans, millennial might have to call his mom if he sees you packing anything other than a cell phone and recycled lunch bags for your granola bars. 9mm or 40 is all I ever carry in WI, except for deer hunting season, then 10mm.

I'd just carry that 7 round 2" 357. Ammo? Whatever shoots the most accurate!

More importantly you need a vest like this:

In the pockets have such items as:

1) Compass ( I carry two... a very good one and a basic one like this)
927693

2) two ways to light a fire. (I prefer lifeboat matches and a magnesium fire starter)
3) lightweight folding knife (or multi-tool)
4) fishing line and hook (mine is in a small medicine bottle)
5) first aid kit with tourniquet, splint, and small quick clot bandage as well as antiseptic and band-aids (don't forget tweezers)
6) at least one day of your 'meds' you need just in case!
7) a life straw so you can drink water out of just about any stream or pond
927694

8) small space blanket (great for many uses!!)
1. keep you warm
2. silver side will be great for SOS signal
3) can start fires if you focus the reflection of the sun
4) help cook food by focusing the flame's warmth
5) and more!

927695

That is the minimum!!

Good canteen to with some redundancy.. (I use an old army 'Artic' canteen cover and cup.. and a plastic 'yuppie' canteen in it. The cup, being larger than the canteen allows me to have a lifestraw, freeze dried food, couple of coffee packets, sugar, creamer, fork and knife... all inside the canteen!!!)

Now the handgun can server several purposes...

a) Signalling device:
1. as a noise maker
2. the gunpowder can be used to make a flare
3. fire starter (again, the gunpowder)
b) sinkers for your fishing line!
c) a drill to make holes in poles for lashing
d) game getter (hunting)
e) protection

Personally I find a good .357 will do just about anything... as for loads... heck 158gr JHPs.. 140s.. 125s.. I don't care. They will all do well!
