I am planning to buy some ammo in bulk and I am curious what the consensus is out of a G19.

124 gr

124 gr +p

147 gr

When I originally had a 9mm years ago I was loading the 124+p. Though I have been eye asking the 147 grain as you are still gettingjust under 1k fsp at 25 yards.

I was sold on the 147 he but then I read that sometimes there is feeding issues?

What is the general consensus?

I typically practice with Federal American Eagle 147grn FP ammo and it’s fed reliably in all of my GLOCKs from the G43 to the G17L. I‘ve carried Federal HST 124 grn and 147 grn in my GLOCKs and tested it in the guns in my carry rotation, which includes the G19, and I’ve never experienced a failure while using it. I’ve been using HST 147 grn in my 9mm carry guns for the last several years. My practice ammo has similar ballistics to my carry ammo, which is one of several reasons I like to practice with the AE 147 grn ammo.

I never understood the +p. I am prepared to be flamed... my understanding of what has made the 9mm compete with the other bigger calibers is 1. slowing the bullet down and 2. adding some mass to the bullet. So no +p for me as it doesn't make sense to me.

I am sure 124 gr +p works fine it just seems to go against what I have learnt through the years.

9mm became more viable because bullet technology allowed for more reliable penetration and expansion of the bullet, at least that’s the explanation more often given. Barrel rifling and altering the bullet weight and velocity can help stabilize a bullet from a particular gun, but I haven’t heard of slowing down the bullet or increasing it’s weight as reasons the 9mm became more viable.

They are all fine you cant go wrong and at times(especially in the shortages) used every one of them. just be sure that they all shoot to your guns POA as I know ive 100% had 124/124+ and 147 and every single one impacted differently.. all would probably qualify you on a LE course that are not THAT far off.. BUT you certainly wouldnt want to think these will ALL hit to the exact same POA/POI they most likely wont. thats also why I like adjustable sights lol.

Of course. As is said, I plan on buying in bulk and buying the same grain l in practice ammo.

My initial reaction was to go for the 147 as you are still getting 1k fps at muzzle and only drops under that (still in the high 900s) at 25 yards but gun fights happen in feet not yards.

Then I think I got paranoid about the reports of failure to feeds and a there is a lot of common sentiment for the 124+p.

The 40/45 comment was a joke BTW.
I’m actually cleaning my G43 as I type this.😂

Here’s my take on 9mm and ammo in general. +p - juice ain’t worth the squeeze, too much muzzle blast/flip and not enough gains. Modern bullets do not need +p IMHO.

As far as buying a ton of defensive ammo - why? Buy a box or two or three and spend the rest on FMJ, or training classes like everyone else will tell you ad nauseum. You really don’t need to shoot HP’s that much. Buy more HP’s when a good sale shows up.

FWIW I carry Speer GD’s or Federal HST’s 124gr standard pressure in my G43 - whichever one is cheaper when I need some I buy a box or 2.

115, 124, 147, it doesn't matter in regard to practice ammo or even defensive ammo.

I carry 124 gr gold dot +p but have mags loaded with 147 gr gold dot and HST, 147 gr G2 gold dot, 124 gr +P HST, 127 gr winchester ranger +p+ and standard 147 gr ranger.

I also keep some Federal 115 gr bp and bple (+p+) jhp laying around.

Define bulk though. Because storage of ammo is another rabbit hole you can get many different opinions about. 10k rounds? 100k rounds?

I keep anywhere from 10-12k rds on rotation.

I think you are right about modern bullet technology for sure.

As for bulk - I think my definition for bulk is different then a lot of people. I mean like 500-1k rounds.

I also want to match what I practice with for what I shoot.

I wish I had that much to throw around.

By bulk I mean around 1k for jhp and the 1k-2k for practice to give me an excuse to spend more time at the range.

Once you confirm your carry ammo runs reliably in your gun and understand the POA/POI you can expect, you can train with anything you like. I understand wanting to have your practice ammo and carry ammo be similar, but under the stress of self defense, it won’t make much difference.

This is true.

It just sucks as the price point at my local place sells 147gr HSTs for 50 bucks for 20 rounds. Complete bonkers.

I can get the same round or the gold dots 1k for 800 or 500 for about 345.

I have 1 bulk buy in .40, 180gr Winchester Ranger Bonded- $239 for 500, and I don’t even carry 180gr in my .40’s 😂. I think in 2020 as agency’s where transitioning from .40 to 9mm 😢.
And 1 250rd box of Precision 1 230gr HP’s when no1 had any defensive ammo. Don’t remember if it was a deal or not but whatever, they’re mine.
Unless you’re really planning on shooting a lot of HP’s I would concentrate on FMJ right now. Apparently powder is becoming a problem and it is an election year.
I think 500 HP would be plenty and up your 9mm FMJ stash to 4-5k.
There are sales all the time, Freedom Munitions has sales coupled with free, $2.99, $3.99 flat rate shipping on orders $200-$2000. SGAmmo is free shipping for orders over $200 I believe. And I’m a big proponent of the Target Sports membership, $95 a year gets you 8% off every order and free shipping on just one box of ammo- a great resource to slowly build up your HP’s. They also had a 16% and a 12% one day sale in the last year.
