Which AK to buy ???

I am looking to picking up an AK with the purpose of it being a combat rifle and I am not familiar with the AK platform at all.

I did jump on board when the SKS were rolling out for bargain prices a long time ago. My SKS only had the modification of replacing the stock.....I sold the rice bowl and sandals that it came with. I remember shooting it with the standard FMJ 123g steel case ammo and getting groups of 4-6" at 100 yards over a rest and with standard "as it came" sights. For me it met my requirements for the purpose I bought it for and I was actually surprised that it did group that well. We had several SKS and our sons loved them for plinking and impressing their dates in high school.

I was at a LGS a while ago when I heard a worker from the back room come out with an AK in his arms, and mentioning to the owner who was talking to me about a pistol I was looking at, "This one has the barrel put on straight !!!" I thought that was an interesting comment and asked the owner about that being a factor. He was a Vet and said that it is something to consider when buying. I know that the quality of these arms is a big variable and it's always better to learn from someone else's experience.

It seems like a lot of the 7.62x39 ammo comes mainly in the FMJ and finding the solid point or HP ammo is more of a challenge. Does that ring true to your experience? Was most of the ammo used in the conflicts around the world with this format shot with mainly FMJ ammo?

I am not interested in turning an AK into a long distance shooter at all, just a combat rifle. I have other ARs in different calibers and make up that take care of the hunting, long distance work, and also combat formats, just want another option moving forward.

Any suggestions about model 74 vs. 47, manufacturers, ammo selection, importers, and retailers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I like Arsenal. But, all AK prices are too high. Arsenal was always high end for the platorm, but I looked at one recently and the price was around $2,000. No way!

Good AK ammo is expensive and hard to find even online. The AR’s 5.56x45 ammo is everywhere and is typically much higher quality.

If you want an AK, then get it and run Wolf and Tula. Figure out how to get an optic on there and you should be good to go.

Many ranges won't allow this ammo. Not saying I agree but it seems more and more are prohibiting anything that sticks to a magnet.

7.62x39 is much more readily available than 5.45x39, so I'd lean that way for your first.

The main go to imported options from $800-1200 out there now are the WASR, ZPAP or WBP Jack. Arsenal is indeed out of control with pricing at ~$2k.

Aside from custom makers or builders, there are a couple US companies, PSA and K-USA, that can also put out decent rifles. Riley is another, but I'm not sure they have a pass from the AK enthusiasts.

Century Arms rifles like the VSKA, BFT47(all those aside from the WASR or most Dracos) are poorly made and not recommended.

I'm looking at a new M70 right now on Gun Broker with tiger-striped maple, and it is gorgeous. Free shipping and no CC fees....$992. I might just forego a Mossberg 590 and get this instead. I too was looking for an AK battle rifle, and this was at the top of the list for me. I have a new WBP Jack, but the more I look at it, the more I think it should be a safe queen. The fit and finish is simply too gorgeous to go to war with. :giggle:

I have around a dozen AK’s. High end stuff, low end as well. They all preform great, but if I was just to have one (technically not an Ak), but the Czech’s version, the CSA VZ58 is milled, way lighter and out preforming all my other AK’s.
I think you can find them now around that $1500 range.

If I was shopping today I would get a WBP Jack.

WBP AK47 JACK RIFLE RUSSIAN SUNBURST - AtlanticFirearms.com

Or if I wanted to save a few bucks the Zastava.

I would stick with 7.62x39mm and buy as much cheap Wolf steel case FMJ that I could afford. Surplus mags and sling and you're good to go.
I’ve heard nothing but good about WPB Jack.
Might be my next pick up

I’d been out of the AK game for over a decade and wanted to get back into it last year. I bought a PSA Zhukov just for fun. I’ve had no problems with it through several hundred rounds, but if I was going to do any serious work, I’d get a Zastava. Arsenal would be great but the pricing is too high for my return at this point.

I’d get a Polish WBP Jack. I can say that because I already own one. Since I already own one, I think my next one will be a Zastava underfolder when they are released to the public.
You can find the Polish WBP Jack in 7.62x39 or 556.
@Jade Falcon thank you for the kind words!

As far as readily available AK’s the Zastavas are good. I particularly like the Kalshnikov USA KR103. If you aren’t a purist the PSA offerings are good specially the premium line with the FN barrel specially in the 103 pattern. The 103 seems of being the best of the 47 and 74. The classic wood ones can be stunning though.

Wow did not know that about KUSA. My friends each have 103’s and I liked them a lot. I own a PSAK 103 with the FN barrel and have been really happy with it. Another friend runs Zastavas they are really nice. My brother has an old pre **** show WASR that has been pretty good. My other friend well he gets parts kits and builds them the way he likes it which isn’t an option for the OP

I purchased one of PSA’s premium AK’s two years ago. It was, by far, my worst firearm purchase ever. It was completely unreliable even after two trips back to PSA and I found the customer service reps generally were indifferent and unhelpful; One was outright rude and dismissive. I had to post a video of my issues on another forum before PSA would acknowledge the problems. Very odd that the post and video disappeared not long after. I sold the rifle for a loss (fully disclosing the problems) and was happy to have it out of my safe.

Man that sucks. I’m sorry to hear that. Yeah PSA’s CS needs a lot of work. They need to and are supposedly looking to hire enthusiastic and knowledgeable people to help un_#ck their 💩 CS. I know of several who’ve applied without a single call back, text or email. Hopefully their hiring manager gets his head outta his _ss and starts hiring some people who want to be there and do the job right. I also know a handful of people who own their “premium” AKs, who have nothing but good things to say about those AKs. Hopefully that experience hasn’t completely soured you to PSA.

As long as you're doing the research do yourself a favor and include the Czechpoint VZ58. I went through the same process as you, looking at the better AKs and was just about sold on an Arsenal when I came across the VZ58. The only thing it shares with an AK is the ammo (and, sort-of, the look). I found it to be very accurate, light and handy - it has a milled receiver and lots of little things like holding open on an empty chamber, being tapped for optics and the ability to have the magazine loaded or topped off using stripper clips. People complain that the magazines aren't a dime a dozen like some AKs are, but milsurp aluminum mags are readily and reasonably available. Look into it - it's a winner.

Arsenal SGL-21-84 but they're $3,000 with a folder now lol.

Given the options (or lack of)

I would recommend the PSA GF5. Buddy has one. Every bit as good as my Arsenal with a better finish and more accurate barrel.

In fact, I'm looking to sell my SGL-21 folder and buy a couple PSA GF5 AKM clones.

Edit:

Fox WBP Polish AK is 100% legit but also pricey at $1,300-1,500 for a stamped AK.

Just take a plane to Pakistan. Drive to the gun market. Buy a real Bulgarian Krink for $600-800 US and grab a bunch of crates of Chinese x39 AP for us too.
