Price range is about $1000. Currently looking at these:

Magnum Research DE1911U. Made by BUL
Colt Defender
Sig Ultra Compact (used)

I am leaning towards the DE1911U. I am familiar with BUL quality, had a BUL Sas-II not too long ago. I have also owned a Defender a few years ago, so I am familiar with those as well. The SIG is no longer offered new, but I see them on Armslist and on Gunbroker once in a while. No idea how the SIG compares to the other ones for quality.

Input on these choices?

No experience with the models you listed and a lot of people will chime in saying that short barreled 1911s are not to be trusted.

But I have a Kimber UtraCarry and for years it has been very reliable with all types of ammo.

Lots of luck and hope you get the Colt....just because it's a Colt. View attachment 1149086

I’m with the clip on this one. Exactly what he said.

Two questions I'd ask before I spent money on an officer 1911. First is are you aware that most jhp is 230 grain and that not with all but quite a few manufacturers ammunition does not reach expansion threshold out of short barrels. The second is there is some history of lack of reliability with the short barrels for not only feeding rounds but spring life.

I swapped out to 185 grain rounds and plus p for my sig 220 just because of a short barrel. Lots of information out there about 45 on short barrels. Do yourself a favor and go exploring.

The only 3" 1911 I own is a Raptor II (link below). It has been a welcomed surprise and reliable and accurate with Critical Duty and HST along with Wolf 230gr. You didn't ask so feel free to disregard but I recommend checking out a Sig P245. If to do over for me, I'd skip the 3" 1911 for the P245. Good luck in your quest.

Thanks for the comments. I have commander and gov sized 1911's already, just looking to add a "different size to the 1911 collection". It will likely be a range gun only, for carry I have a Shield in 45 or my Ruger Max.

The Colt and DE both are relatively light at around 24oz, that is another thing I like about them.

I have a Detonics Combat Master. It is the only subcompact 1911 I own.
It has been in the family since my Dad bought it new in 1978. I carried it as as BUG in Iraq for a few years.
It is supremely reliable. I have no issues with feeding any ammo I run through it. Accuracy is on a par with any subcompact- not match grade, but minute-of-bad guy.

Get whichever stubby 1911 feels good and fits your budget- they'll all work pretty equally.

Me too.

I like Colts 3” 1911’s in .45.
Have a few of them, and had no issues running through my police qualification course for 10 plus years. Can’t say the same for some full sized firearms.

I did run Wilson magazines and changed the recoil spring every year or two based on if I shot it a bit.

There’s an article penned in 2015 by Chuck Taylor on the best ammo for the Ultra Carry II. He recommends Corbon DPX 160 grain. I know light for caliber but that’s what I carry. Supposedly 1000fps out of the barrel. I bought some when it was $24-6 for a 20rd box. Now $46 if you can even find it. I for some reason can’t post links here, either my phone or just stupidity.

Nuther vote for the Kimber! Sadly is't s series 1 and I won't comment on any of the other revisions.

BUT - The 3" 45 is real! I decided to get this one as I watched a couple young men shooting eggs at 25'... They let me try, and I popped 3 eggs in sequence... Bought this little gem a week later!

Used it in USPSA Single Stack and IDPA with great success. But the allure of the Glock Magazine Capacity eliminated it from carry duty, especially due to the weight... {sigh}

Hope you pick a reliable pistol! I imagine the designs are more robust these days!

Have fun shopping!
