Hello and greetings from Montenegro
I was wondering can you all give me advice
I am planing on buying Glock 17 gen 4 or gen 5, but I was wondering which finish is better , harder to scratch , which finish is better.
I dont mind a barrel wear marks , but i do mind a slide marks , and please give me answer , not “i dont mind scars stuff”

tnx

In my experience gen5 finish is more durable than gen 4, gen 3 finish is more durable than both 4/5. I carried both gen 4/5 on duty, the gen 4 quickly showed holster wear from issued safariland holster. The gen 5 also showed wear but took much longer. It should be noted none of the wear affected functionality. I subjected my gen3 g23 to much more abuse when carried off duty and the slide still looks good, no holster wear to be found anywhere on the slide. Good luck.

The Gen 5 finish is more durable but it will chip almost like a painted surface. I chipped my Gen. 5 Glock 27 finish just laying it down on my tole bathroom vanity/sink thing not that it matters. The Gen. 5 finish is impervious to kydex holster wear. Yes my carry pistol is in need of a proper dusting…..

The finish on the Gen5 looks better and unless you're really hard on it I don't think you'll have major issues. It does seem more durable to me. But here's the thing, you said that you don't keep them in a holster but in a bag with loose keys and stuff, metal rubbing up against just about any gun finish is going to leave marks. If you're that worried about it, why not just keep it in a soft holster inside the bag where the slide is mostly protected? More importantly, it will cover the trigger so keys won't get hung up in your trigger.

Gen 5 finish seems pretty durable imo. But what does Glock do, spray paint the damn slide stop/release? Before I even shot my Glocks I had it coming off on my thumb just with playing with it lol.
Yeah for as long as I can remember, the finish on Glock slide stop/release levers has be abysmal and comes off damn near just looking at it.

Keys, coins, ammo, other tools, and rocks are not something to tumble your Glock with. If you are carrying in a bag, put the gun in s a sock.

Gen 5 uses nDLC coating, a high end type of PVD (physical vapor deposition) that is used on industrial tools. Prior to Gen5 it was just surface paint (some of it looked like 'frying pan" finish, but there was no single specific paint or lot that was the "frying pan" - just a visual legend).

Some will claim that their Gen5 finish is more sensitive to wear than their Gen4 guns, but these are not side by side testing, and subject to bias.

I never had any trouble with the Gen 4 finish, and I doubt if the Gen 5's is any worse, and probably is much better. My experiences with gen 5 guns is the are better than all preceeding "generations." Get the Gen 5.
