Hello all.

I’m looking for a very low profile concealment cuff case for a pair of Peerless hinged cuffs. I am in plainclothes and have to carry concealed 100% of the time. I wear an 1.5” gun belt, if that matters.

I’ve been using one of these for about a year and I hate it. If I have to run, the bikini case literally slides off the metal clip causing the cuffs to go bye-bye.

Another thing I hate about this case, is how low it sits. So, any recommendations that might ride higher, and sit close to my body and conceals well, would be absolutely amazing.

(I tried searching the forum, but was unsuccessful)

Thanks in advance.

I had a small cuff carrier I used sometimes, but most of us just hung cuffs over our belts, one inside, one outside. My case did not clip on, it had a belt loop, I believe it was Gould and Goodrich. Snapped in the center. I also had a single strap that had one of those "lift the dot" snaps. Both worked very well.

Carrying hinge cuffs limits your options for concealment pouches. Just not as many options.

When I carry cuffs in plain clothes I just tuck a pair in the back of my pants. I haven’t found a pouch that I like.

My work issues the Safariland cuff/spare mag combo paddle back pouch. It sucks.

Something like this with a pair of chain cuffs would be my choice. https://www.galls.com/gould-goodrich-belt-loop-handcuff-case

I’m not a fan of hinge cuffs at all, for multiple reasons.

Stealth gear makes a IWB cuff case that would be extremely low profile but I've heard they are not the easiest to get cuffs back into. The Gould Goodrich cuff case I'd pretty nice and is about as low profile as you can as for. I use the combo magazine/cuff version when I need to. Most often my cuffs are in a pocket or tucked into my belt.

It depends on what you're doing exactly. My advice is to get what is comfortable and functional rather than trying to go super low profile with everything. Most plain clothes guys are super easy to make as cops anyway and you shouldn't be wearing that stuff if you are trying not to look like the cops.

TT Gunleather, ttgunleather.com makes the best custom leather handcuff case I’ve ever had. It can be snapped on or off without removing your belt and is so much better than the bikini style holder.

I used the Galco cuff case that went on the Miami Classic shoulder holster.Comes in black or tan. They make two models, one for hinged and one for chain.Rides close and is small enough to conceal.

I have one like this if you are interested.

I was plainclothes for the last 13 years of my career.

I never cared for hinged cuffs.

I carried mine with one side tucked into the waistband of my slacks. I tried a couple of different cuff carriers, but didn't care for them.

Really appreciate it all the feedback. Maybe I’ll give just tucking them in my waistband a go for the next few days to see how I like it.

I’ve seen/tried most of the other recommendations and I think I’ve found my biggest problem. Apparently, I am a princess [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]. I’m probably going to order some overpriced custom kydex rig, wear it for a month and hate it. Because that’s who I am as a person.

Also, I just can’t get along with chained cuffs. Was issued a pair by my employer and promptly put them in my “issued but will never use” box.

Have you cuffed many folks while rolling around in a fight, or trying to keep them contained? Chained cuffs give you some handy "flexibility" when everything's in motion. Can be easier to hang onto, too, meaning closing your fist tighter when only one side is hooked up.

Another thing to consider is that a chained cuff, if only applied to one wrist, becomes a flail if you lose control, while the hinged cuff may become a more "rigid" threat to you if a tender body part of yours gets in the way as a suspect flails around.

Granted, I had plenty of opportunity to become used to tucking one or more sets of cuffs into my waistband when working uniform. Handy to be able to move them up front when things are planned or appear imminent at times, too.

Wow! A lot of you guys carried cuffs like that! I never could do it and still make fun of the tucked into the pants crowd.

I carried hinged cuffs when plainclothes made by the “ripoff” company.

I used a mini zip tie from Home Depot to turn the belt clip to a belt loop. Used it for many years.

And as you know, it’s sometimes easier to leave gear on the belt when going off duty then to take it all off and put it back on. No one noticed I had handcuffs

Yeah, although they issued me a leather cuff case for my gun belt, I noticed all the guys working the really active beats kept their open or closed top cuff cases as backups, and carried their primary cuffs tucked over the front of their gun belts. Some of the guys who were making a lot of arrests often carried 2 pair of cuffs tucked over the front of their gun belts (in addition to a backup cuff case). Some tucked them 'over' their uniform belt & behind their gun belt, and some just split them over each side of their gun belts.

Just to show how things can sometimes go, I remember a time when I didn't tuck a set of cuffs in front of my belt, thinking the set of them in my newly issued plastic case was sufficient for the low activity beat I was working one day. The snap flap of the closed case was working just fine ... right up until I really needed the cuffs to secure an unhappy parolee from whom I'd taken a gun. No joy. That case flap was NOT going to open. I later had to rip the flap open, tearing the flap away from the snap closure (which remained closed). I didn't forget to tuck the "primary" cuffs in the front of my gun belt after that, and I gave that new type of cuff case back to Property, getting out one of my old, well-worn leather cases. ;)

I frequently have a set tucked into my belt or tossed in a pocket. I only wear a pouch when I'm going to be actively involved in a tactical operation. I make fun of "plain clothes" guys who wear more tactical gear than uniform guys, or even the SWAT guys do. I have never figured out the point of "plain clothes" officers that look like they came out of a 5.11 catalog. Plain clothes is meant to blend in and not attract attention. Having all that junk around your waist prints and can show if you're not very careful totally negating the point of being plain clothes. Part of the reason for the tucked into the belt carry is so I can ditch them quickly should I need to. It does make things hilarious when a guy can forget his mag / cuff case and still get a successful drug buy with it in plain view and even being pointed out by the dealer.
