How loud is an AR15 VS an AK47?

Maybe a strange question -

What I am really trying to do is find a semi auto rifle for my wife -

She hates the loud noise of my AK - we have tried several different types of hearing protection - but even with foam plugs & muffs she still thinks my AK is TOO LOUD.

She loves shooting my .22 caliber rifle - and is a pretty good shot - I would like to see her shoot something with a little more stopping power.

How loud is the .223 round? OR what semi auto rifle besides a .22 makes the least amount of noise?

I'm willing to bet when she says noise she means recoil.

I'm sure you've cleared that up with her and she said "no its the noise" but I'm willing to bet thats not it.

Case in point? A .223 is just as loud as 7.62x39 but she'll like shooting it much better.

We shoot outdoors -

It is the noise not the recoil - because I am the one shooting the AK - she will go stand 20 feet away to get away from the noise.

Probably a dumb question but do the muffs fit her? I thought my muffs were the "best available" but my wife complained of loud noise when she wore them, we tried a different brand and she is good now.
Make sure to get some with a higher DB rating also that helps, but if they don't seal around her ears they are all but useless.

Maybe I need to put more effort into finding better hearing protection for her -

When I use the foam & muff combo I am not bothered at all by the noise.

She does have small "ear holes" - and has a hard time getting the foam plugs to go inside the ear very far.

How about a pistol caliber carbine? 9mm or .45? It would be alot less noise, recoil. There are plenty or AR's available in pistol calibers too. Just a suggestion...
I have a 40 S&W carbine (HiPoint) - she has shot it a few times and doesn't mind the recoil or noise - maybe I should be shopping for a 9MM carbine :dunno:.

All unsupressed gunfire is loud and within a few decibels of range. It is the frequency and the perception that one receives that is the deciding factor.

An muzzle brake will make one weapon sound louder, but take it off and the
perception changes. The sound output has not varied one bit.

A longer barrel "sounds louder" than a short barrel, but it is not when measured by recording equipment at the muzzle.

The quietest .223 I've fired was a friend's AR with 11" barrel and 5" welded on extended flash hider (to make legal length I assume). The flash hider must act like an expansion chamber. With the short barrel I was expecting it to be louder than 20" AR's or bolt guns, but it was clearly less noisy than either.

I'd agree that AR's are overall notably louder than AK's

#1 muffs
#2 good muffs
#3 plugs also
#4 Teach her to keep her mouth shut (maybe impossible for a woman). But sounds can "get in" that way!

Finally - the noise is WORSE when it is surprising. I ind it always polite to alert fellow/companion shooters what & when I'm going to do it. so if you are mag dumping at an irregular interval - that's annoying to many people, me included. She probably can't stand it.

Oh yes....don't use her for a stand. If you ar setting the barrel on her shoulder to fire, that might be it also.
