Hi all,

I'm looking at building a new Glock project gun. The purpose of the gun (obviously the best consideration to start with) is IPSC competition and a defensive sidearm in open-carry situations (hiking/hunting/camping/SHTF situation/at home).

I've settled on a full-size small-frame Glock (e.g. G17/22/31) as the base, and then adding an aftermarket slide/barrel. This is simply because a Glock 24 (longslide .40) isn't available with a rail, and if it were, it'd be too expensive anyway (~$800 before two barrels, sights, etc.). Let's assume I'm starting with the frame+frame components of the base gun.

I want two calibers as well: 9mm and .357sig. Not interested in .40. (Sometime in the future I'll want to reproduce this gun based on a G21 with .45acp/.40 super, but for now I'll be shooting all 9mm and a little .357)

So here's the question: Who should I be looking to for the long slide and barrels? Basically I need a G24 slide, but they aren't out there used - have to get a new aftermarket one, and same is true with long barrels in .357 and 9mm conversion. I'm inclined to get both the slide and barrels (6.02" .357 barrel and 6.02"+threaded barrel in 9mm) from LoneWolf because they're relatively inexpensive. Is that a big mistake? Is there somewhere else I should be looking, and will that other place really be worth any extra $$ I'd have to throw at it?

Here's the LoneWolf 9mm conversion threaded barrel

Here's the slide at LoneWolf

Thanks folks - I'll hope to be hearing from you!

Here's basically what I imagine the thing looking like (this is from ColoradoGlocker I believe):

(Except without the extended slide lock - those things drive me nuts.)

Here's a picture of my 24 and it definately has a rail, which dont matter to me but 1 of 3 LWD long slides with their .357 sig barrel also. One hell of a shooter. Got a 21L and a LWD 34 slide on my G-19 third gen lower. After this first one in the pic, I have had no desire to look anywhere else. Excellent stuff, customer service is second to none and their products speak for their selves.. Sorry but have no info on others but when I researched for my first one everything I came up with lead me to LWD for a reason and I will go back again. Money wasn't even a consideration. Money's worth, is a lot more important to me..:wavey:

Sir, I have no input to your query. However, I would like to congratulate you on a well written and thoughtful post. I often see posts on things like this that leave me wondering it the poster has really given any thought to the subject.

One of the wonderful things about firearms is that we can customize them. It doesn't matter if anyone else likes what we are planning, we like it, and that's all that matters.

When your project is complete, I hope you will share not only finished results, but some of the trials and tribulations along the way.

Awesome - I thought they didn't make rails on the 24! Thanks for the photo - I'll wipe the drool off my screen later :p

Also interesting to hear that those slides will fit on a G19 frame (with a G17/22/31 recoil assemb. I assume). I might consider getting the shorter frame then, since that'd allow me more variability in modulating the gun. Does that really work?

Thanks for the review of LDW - that's what I was hoping to hear!

Jeepnik, thanks for the encouragement - just got signed up for the forums yesterday! Hopefully we can have lots more chatter, and yes, I'll definitely be posting info about the gun as it gets built. I'm excited for the finished product, and I'll probably use it for myself and also let the rest of my college IPSC/Steel team use it, so we should see it with several thousand rounds of 9 through it in the near future!

Best!

PLEASE sir dont be mislead. There is one more peice you need to make that slide fit the shorter frame. It's called the DC-1 or dust cover that fills the gap between the shorter compact frame and the full sized frame. With this set up you will have to run a fullsized guiderod and spring.:wavey:

cool AK74Play! I figured there'd be some sort of spacer in there. Thanks - I'll look it up! I'll still have to think some about whether I like the slightly lengthened grip on the 17/22/31 over the 19/23/32.

BamaTrooper: Thinking about doing the same thing but for a hunting gun. Glockmeister has frames for 199.
Cool - 10mm? Glock even makes a long (6.02") drop-in barrel for that. Or .45? I know my dad's taken a couple deer with a 1911.

I've been drooling on .40 super recently, assuming I could get set up to load for it. That'd knock a deer over, maybe with a Barnes copper bullet of about 145 gr. going about 1700fps?

Yeah I thought about that too, but the shorter grip makes it easier to hide and I'm a real shinny guy so I need all the help I can get and you only loose 2 rounds so my spare mag is either a 17 mag or a 19 mag with a +2 extension on it...Also their customer service will help you with any question you might have or come up with either via e-mail or give them a call. Great CS....

AK, after shooting my G32 i have just been amazed by the .357sig just seeing how well it works. Your avatar has got me buying more glocks. My local find was a G34OD wow how well it feels. So i ordered a few more toy's one is the G35 a .40 i plan on getting a sig barrel for it then i will have Glock 35 in a .40 and more what i want a sig in a 5.32'' barrel. I hope L/W makes a barrel or a KKM which ever can make a sig barrel in the length i need. As soon as my check clears the 4 i ordered will be shipped to my FFL.

I have L/W on my G20 and is Great,Thanks for the past help and any input on this project i would be gracious for. Then i will have a longslide .357sig and use 15 rd sig mags for it. As you can tell i'm pretty excited. The barrel is not quite what you have 6.02'' but i hope it shoots good and thats enough for me. Thanks AK, David BTW i'm going this way since it will be for fun and the range and i have big hands i may even carry it time will tell.

The .357 sig cartridge is my personal favorite. Yes LWD does make the barrel you need for that project. I have a 34 & 35 and I ordered the 35 in the first plact because I wanted a Practical / Tactical .357 sig. after my G-31 ruined me for life. So I ordered a Barsto .357 sig barrel for it and WOW it is fantastic. Since then I have done a ton of research and discovered even though Barsto is a great barrel I could have done the same thing for less money and the same results with LWD. I would recomend LWD to anyone because they have proved to me that what they make and sell is well worth the money and their attention to detail is excellent. The price and customer service is the icing on the cake. Those long slides are as close as you can get to a carbine and still holster and carry it and YES with the right holster you can carry them easily. Hell as skinny as I am and I can carry a 6 inch barreled long slide undetected I would think most anybody could unless maybe one was exceptionally round. NO OFFENSE intender to anyone, just saying that I realize it could be difficult for a few. I even carry a 6 inch S&W 357 mag in a vertical shoulder holster and a light jacket when its cool is all it takes to go completely undetectable. I wish you all the best in you venture to acheive the results you are looking for and glad if I could assist in any way, But remember the final decision is yours alone so run with your ideas I think you'll be happy...:wavey:

Hey thats a great set up. I also agree with the use of sig mags with the sig barrel. Thats also what I do just to keep the right ammo with the right barrel. You should really like that. It's the equilivent of a 9mm 100yd hand gun.

Heh yeah - exactly what I want to do with the 357 barrel for mine: shoot steel at 100 yards, or around there.

Also I've heard that you're not really going to run into problems with feeding the .357 because of the bottleneck. I'll bet just getting a new follower for the more readily available G22 mags would do just as well, especially if you already own any (and some claim you don't even have to do that). That's a $2 part on the armorer's parts list.
