I realize they are a very good cooler, but I'm not going to a three day tailgate party. My daughter just bought her husband one for his birthday on sale for $500. Empty, it weighs more than my car, but it does say YETI on it in big letters. I asked her why and she said it would look great on the truck tailgate and would keep the ice from melting for three days. Tailgating lasts about three hours not three days. I think this is right up there with her love for Kate Spade, Coach, Michael Kors and every other piece of ego boosting over-priced designer crap!

Man buns, lumberjack beards that never lumberjack, and 4-wheelers that never see dirt.

    And oh- onesies for 'guys'.

No doubt some buy for the snob appeal. Others do need that performance and quality.

They're definitely a redneck status symbol around here. I won a knockoff and it sat in my garage all year until I started using it to age deer quarters. It's great for that, but now deer season is over and it won't be touched again until this fall.

I think it's silly. What's the point of having a $400 cooler when you open it every 15 mins to get a beer out.

I have a $50 Coleman that will keep ice for days if opened minimally.

It's a status symbol like a Tag watch and Rayban sunglasses.

I can see the utility in a Yeti if you need to keep things cold or frozen for multiple days, but not so much for a backyard cookout or tailgating. But it's not my money, and I spend in ways that most others would find curious, at best. I hope her husband likes it.

I was with you until this one. Are there packs of hipsters patrolling the streets of Williamsburg on ATVs?

I packed a frozen elk in one last December. I left New Mexico, drove to South Dakota to pheasant hunt for a few days then drove another 900 miles home. A couple days later, when I took the meat to my butcher, it was still frozen.

My brother even has a wagon to put it in.

I don't get it either. But do see that there are others now cutting into their profit share.

If they ever go camping they will not have to buy ice everyday .

The Yeti crowd is the same folks who buy a $15,000 Perazzi trap gun and can't hit the ground with it. The gun doesn't fit, but they won't have the stock cut or shaved because they don't want to alter its appearance. I guess I don't understand the ego thing. A lot of these people are eating raman noodles for dinner just so they can buy a Yeti. A case for their choice not mine.

The status symbol motivation is a big part of it - and there is nothing wrong with that if you can responsibly afford it. Our local 'necks have money to blow, so I don't knock them for it. Oh, and tailgate parties should be in the sixteen hour range, not three hour range.

I don't know who buys them, but my local shop has sold a small mountain of them in the last few months. Same thing with "Big Green Egg" grills.

It's OK with me. I don't want either, but I'm sure the people who buy them like them.

Now this is the kind of thing they are for. Or if you're out for multiple days in the back country or out on a boat fishing. The only people I know that really have a use for them tend to stay out on a boat fishing for a few days. Really the market is limited for practical use. But this is a marketing success story. Good for Yeti.

You used to be able to get a large Styrofoam cooler for about a dollar. It would hold ice for most the day :)

You still can for those "damnit, I should have brought a cooler with me" days.
