I don't have Xbox, but I am curious: What are Xbox "live" and Xbox "connect"? Can either of them play with other PCs over the internet? I keep hearing about them, and I have no idea what they are.

Neither can play with PCs over the internet.

XBOX live is the official XBOX online gaming network. It costs $50 a year or so and you can play XBOX live games. You get a headset and you can talk to other gamers. Everything is done on the XBOX, you just plug it into a broadband internet connection.

XBOX connect is a PC program that works with your XBOX to facilitate online gaming. It requires a router so that your PC and XBOX are connected simultaneously. It allows you to play system link games that allow connecting 2-4 xboxes together. Halo is not an XBOX live game therefore it can only be played on XBOX connect or gamespy.
