Wrist injury...

405 15
During my last academy I hurt my wrist. I documented it and went to the doc on base who said it was only a sprain and should be OK in a couple weeks. The doc instructed me to take ibuprofen and ice it. I heard a decent 'pop' when it happened so I asked if I needed an x-ray. He said "that isn't necessary". I sucked it up and finished the academy with a lot of ice, tape, and ibuprofen. When I went home I figured I'd feel better soon.

Well...for the past 11 months my wrist hasn't improved. In fact the pain has increased and my grip strength and range of motion have decreased. I finally got off my butt and talked to our admin people about having my injury looked at.

Thank God I filed that injury paper.

I had an MRI done last week. My simple sprain turned out to be a grade 4 strain. I have 3 ligaments in my wrist that are 100% tear / ruptures and a fourth ligament that is a 50% tear.

I meet with a hand surgeon next week who will tell me what can be done about fixing my hand. Cross your fingers. Hopefully I'll be able to put this behind me and get back to work.

Please, when you get the tweaks, strains, sprains :steamed:, injuries, and exposures that come with this job, take the few minutes and document it!

Oh it hurts. Especially if I try to do anything with it.

Yeah good thing you filed. I would probably have trouble finding mine from the academy. It's been so long ago.

I met with a surgeon yesterday. He told me that there aren't any problems that surgery can't make worse.

He thinks surgery could make my wrist even worse and more painful (and end my career). He shot up my wrist with a half gallon of cortisone and suggested I get a second opinion from a surgeon that he works with.

Um, if your career is shot when they attempt to repair this, isn't your employer on the hook for finding you a new job in the department or retraining you? Isn't this a workman's comp claim?

Yes it is and yes they are...I'm 36 years old and not ready to hang it up yet. I'm meeting with an occupational therapist / hand specialist on Monday. We'll see what they can do for me.

He still won't admit that he really hurt his wrist during self-service :quiet:

OK... 1st: I'm an 'under-hand lefty'. I only need the right hand to click the mouse... :whistling:

I met with a second surgeon today. Since getting the cortisone shot the pain has decreased a lot. I'm wearing a small wrist brace and have been cleared for duty.

According to the surgeon the radiologist that read the MRI and wrote the report assumed injuries were worse than they are because the dye injected into my wrist leaked into different areas. I do have two torn ligaments, but they appear to be partial tears.

Okay, now serious... Did anyone mention micro-tears? The two large tears can heal and there still might be micro tears. Even after the major damage appears healed, these may be a factor. You might just ask...:wavey:
