I drive a 2000 Olds Intrigue as a commuter. It's getting a bit worn around the edges, so we're considering replacing it. We've been looking at used cars and there are a lot of PT Cruisers out there for a decent price. It would mostly just be used to go to work and back (11 miles each way, and I usually don't take the highway), but on rare occasion I would load my 3 small kids in (the oldest doesn't need a car seat anymore). I'd also load it up with gear to go shooting every month or two (at least I'd like to). I think they're ugly, but I care about price and function way more than what it looks like.

So do you think I'm crazy for considering a used PT Cruiser?

you will get tons of its ugly and pos dodge etc etc but i got a 2001 limited with 170 ,000 miles and has been rock solid , only thing major was timing belt swap every 60,000 but thats regular maintenance .

    just oil and fluids .

the only thing i dont like is the auto is geared wrong and gas mileage is not great , it needs another gear to lower rpm at cruising speed

get what you want . :wavey:

I agree with the "get what you want" sentiment...but maybe you should want something else.

Find at PTGT and you'll be more than happy.

The PT may not look great but the 2.4 motors are damn near bullet proof.

They have loads of room are decent on gas, the later models have the 4 speed auto that solves the lack of an overdrive gear in the 3 speed models.

Pop the hood and look at the two radiator mounts that stick through the top of the core support. They are on either side and look like plastic ovals with a small plastic rod sticking out the top (like a pop up turkey timer)... If they are not seated in the core sport that is an excellent indicator that the lower core support has been damaged by bottoming out.

Probably 9/10 PT's I look at have core support damage. If you can find one that is squared away it will last a lot longer and I have seen them with 200k plus miles if they are taken care of.

I rented one once. It was the worst car ergonomically I've ever been in. All it is, IIRC, is a Neon with an ugly body. I'd look further.

Consumer Reports did not have kind things to say about the PT Cruiser's reliability.

It made their Worst of the Worst list for cars that have multiple years of much worse than average reliability among 2002 to 2011 models.

I rented one once. By far the most uncomfortable vehicle I've ever driven. The seats just didn't fit me and I always felt like I was sliding off the front of the seat.

What a shame, I like the look of them and the Chevy HHR. Reminds me of the old Nomads I always wanted.

No car from any company that took bailout $$$$, and that Chrysler products have the worst reliability ratings.

My vote is to keep looking. I don't have personal experience with a pt cruiser but I did have a neon (which is the same damn thing) and it was a piece of crap.

Buying a used car does nothing for Chrysler. A new one would be different.

That said, I know several people who own them. None are happy with it. There's a reason resale sucks on them and so many "deals" are available. Buy a used VW Rabbit/Golf instead(2007 or younger).
