When I first joined they had T-Rats they weren't individual meals they came in something the size of a cake pan and the mess hall would ship them out to the fields and in theory you put them in boiling water for five minutes to heat them up then you open them up and you serve chow. In reality you ate them cold.

Anyway there was a breakfast T-Rat that I ate for two years that LOOKED LIKE scrambled eggs and sausage. It wasn't till I had KP and I got to open one that I found out it was Hominy Grits and sausage.

First gen MRE's pork patty. Don't know that I ever saw anyone take more than one bite. The smell alone was pretty unappetizing.

But at least they had cheese

At my first duty station someone in my section got the bright idea of signing out a propane Coleman stove from MWR every time we went to the field. We also signed out a campfire percolating coffee pot to go with it.

1. We ALWAYS had hot coffee which sucked because the Platoon Sergeant lived under our net .

2. We had hot food

3. Best of all at night we'd set up the stove in the tent and run it long enough to heat up the tent then turn it off. No fire guard.

jalapeno cheese spread or peanut butter. Legend has it the debate is still ongoing.

Oh no. This was in the old days when there was no such thing as Jalapeno Cheese Spread. Straight up cheese.

When I was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston the 187th Medical Training Detachment served that nasty MRE Corned Beef Hash for breakfast twice a week.
