    How often do you hear "oh I forgot to pay for this, let me go in and pay for it" when you arrest someone for shoplifting? I bet it's rather often.

    I've "stolen" before, and have gone back to the store to pay for an item that was missed.

    And...I've "stolen" and not gone back to pay because of cirucumstances.

    Accidents happen. Damn shame she couldn't have just been able to pay for it when it happened.

    What is missing from the story is the details on how she "picked up the pumpkin when she was leaving the propety". It could have been obvious she was intent on stealing it and instead of just being forgetful as she claimed.

    Lots, but I usually show up after the shopkeep has already detained the person. By then, they're generally pretty honest. And by then, the decision to prosecute is up to the victim, not the cop.

    This article is actually much better, overall, than the one I read earlier. The other one made it sound much more benign.

    +1, doesn't matter if it was $2 or $2000, it is what it is. It doesn't have to go to trial. She chooses to do so, hoping that she'll get off better than she would with a plea.

    So, sister Annette, be miffed with your sister about the fact that it "has to go to trial."
