It's time for a reformat on the home PC. It's used primarily for gaming, GT browsing, light MS Office work and photo / music management.

I'll need to pick up an operating system. I imagine I'll just purchase Windows XP which it currently has, but I figure I'd toss the idea of Windows 7 into the ring to see if I may have missed a reason to "upgrade." (I typically like each version of MS products less than the previous version - I'd still be using Windows 3.11 if I could).

System hardware performance is not an issue.

    Thanks.

I work in Tech. Support for one of the largest DSL service providers in the northeast after significant testing of all the latest OS's currently on the market we have found that for Microsoft OS (XP) is still the best.

I'm happy with Windows 7. But something you may need to check before changing not everything is supported. An example is my Canon 20D does not have a driver to work on 7. But the new Canon DSLR's do.

Windows 7 no doubt about it. IT has backwards compatibility for xp, it runs super fast.

I've had 7 for two weeks and I'm really starting to like it, I wouldn't say it's really fast but it does seem faster than XP.

I don't want to either. I'll most likely stick with XP but I was just making sure I wasn't missing anything.

Why not pick up a copy of Windows XP 64-bit?

    Best of both worlds?

:agree: with this. I've been using this OS for my system since last November. It *seems* to run much faster than XP, IMO.

Comparing XP 64 to Windows 7 is apples and oranges.

I have been in IT for 15 years and have seen every iteration of the Windows OpSys since 3.11

If your machine will run XP, it will run Windows 7 and there's absolutely no reason, none, not to install the new OS and get ris of the 7 year old architecture.

For those holding on to XP, I submit that you are just comfortable and see no reason to change, mostly because you haven't actually used the new OS.

Like the other poster said, M$ finally got one right, out of the box and off the shelf, it's a vastly superior product to XP.

I'm the guy on the other end that slams his toughbook (now Dell) around in the car, field, etc. for emergency response. When I need it to work, XP is the way to go, but I don't believe it's available anymore (sans netbooks, and that should tell you something), and MS is not supporting it.

Just downloaded 7 to personal computers that were Vista, and 7 works flawlessly, and more like XP.
