I am looking for some information on an old shotgun I recently inherited.
A Winchester model 1897 12GA. It seems to be in very good working condition. There is some pitting and a little scratching on the stock but the action is very smooth. I have found out that the production of this gun stopped in 1902. Does anyone have any information on the history of this gun or a good web site for finding it? How about potential value? I was also given 3 boxes of ammo that appear to be as old as the gun but look like they just came right out of the store yesterday. Pretty cool.
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

They made the '97s until the '50s IIRC.
    Great guns.

They are priced all over the board...saw one in decent, shooting condition go for under $400 at a local show this year, and have seen them listed well over $1000 in standard trim. Soungs like you got a nice one...hang on to it.

The model 97 I owned had a nasty habit of firing when the bolt closed , and I have learned it was a common occurence if the gun was dirty. Have it cleaned and checked over before you fire it.
