Only range brass a sort is 9mm. Most foreign brands wont take 147 without a small bulge That hampers chambering. So i toss back most foreign stuff. Its not perfectly good if it doesnt work for the reloader.
You have to watch some of that foreign NATO stuff with the big step. Far less capacity can create over pressure loads!

I reload a lot of 147 Zero JHP's. I've not seen much bulging in most brass I reload. So you're saying that some brass if loaded with 147's can bulge the case? Which ones (head stamps) have you found that do this? Most of the problems I encounter with my 550C are primer pocket related.

From what I gather from the comments here, and I was afraid I was going to hear this, I really need to start separating head stamps. I would think my load consistency would improve.

Thanks for the help, folks!

I’m with you. Sorting buckets of 45 ACP for SPP is a PIA. Switching from SPP to LPP in the 650 is just a step I don’t really need.

#1 reason I don't use "range brass"....too many unknowns.....fwiw:cool:
Not really. Though good for me, i am fine with range brass for service calibers. I am just selective about what i pickup.

I have a lot of pick up/range brass and it seems like more and more OEMs are now putting a primer crimp in their brass. Brands that never came that way are now sporting the crimp. Some of the military rounds are easier to spot with the headstamping, but many of the civilian stuff is now coming like the military run stuff.

I'm wondering if it's just easier for a manufacturer to just run everything 9mm from their shop with a crimp, rather than use different equipment or make adjustments to the current.????

I bought two 1000 rd bags of 223/5.56. A third has be LC 5.56 brass but at least two thirds of all brands are crimped. Why change your tools?

Call me a brass snob, but to me, life’s to short to mess with crimped 9mm brass because 9mm is lying everywhere. Crimped 9mm goes into my scrap bucket along with Amerc, CBC, anything with stepped walls, eastern bloc brass, and any headstamp starting with a Z. I donate the contents to my scrap bucket to our club where it helps fund our kids and women’s groups.

Primer crimping is a separate operation. Upset and slightly offset forming of the case after priming seating. There are many different brands out today. Some US and allot of foreign. Recently ran into these stamped XF, with a 2 digit year marking. Made by Sumbro in Macedonia. Not crimped, but the primer wouldn't punch out completely. Some commercial head stamps are crimped, notably FC NT. They have to be swaged, unlike WIN NT. I don't use any stepped cases (AmmoLoad, Freedom, IMT, or MaxxTech). I prefer Speer the most, WIN and FC are good, along with Blazer, R-P. If you run a Dillon 1050 press, it has a built in swager.
