What will a 10 inch barreled 5.56/.223 drop large game wise? Just wondering what this round is capable of.

Sure it will drop a large deer but it is hardly an optimum cartridge. In the past, Eskimos have been known to kill polar bears with .22 Hornets but I wouldn't try it.

The .223/5.56 is losing a lot of velocity in a 10" barrel. Even if it's legal in your state, I'd pick a better cartridge and rifle combination. Don

With correct shot placement, and good 'heavy bullet' of proper construction...possibly. (if even legal in your state..)

The .223 would never be my first choice, however. (and even less so for a 'large' deer)

Probably more reliably than out of a longer barrel.
The reason 5.56 has such varied penetration is because the bullet sometimes breaks up.

A slower bullet will work better. Use the heaviest you can find though.

I've heard in some states it's illegal to hunt deer with .223 and not because it's an "assault rifle" cartridge.

It might. Regardless if it could or if the round and or hunting with a SBR in your state is legal it is very irresponsible. It is not something an ethical hunter would do. It is for from the best choice even for a survival/emergency situation.

If you can afford a Sig SBR, you can afford a descent proper caliber rifle. Savage makes many rifles under 450 bucks.

    I agree with this 100%.
Unless of course you can walk up and place it on the back of his head!!!

I've seen people deer hunt with a .223 in south Arkansas. It's legal here, but that don't make it the right thing to do. A .22 long rifle out of a 10 inch barrel can kill a large deer if you had to.

An example of that would be Kansas...

Legal rifle for deer - centerfire rifles that are not fully automatic and that fire a bullet larger than .23 inches in diameter, while using only hard-cast solid lead, soft point, hollow point, or other expanding bullets.

Legal shotgun for deer - 20 gauge or larger, using only slugs.

Legal handgun for deer - centerfire handguns that are not fully automatic, fire a bullet larger than .23 inches in diameter, and use a cartridge case 1.280 inches or more in length, while using only hard-cast solid lead, soft point, hollow point, or other expanding bullets.

Definitely not the preferred choice due to power and bullet breakup. The .223 would be legal in WI for deer hunting, but hunting rifle requirement is 26" OAL and 16" barrel last time I checked.

The 5.56 round (55grain) was designed to be fired out of a 20" barrel with a 1/12 twist. Very effective combination.

Long story, but a doe committed suicide in front of my Ruger
Mini 14 Target two years ago in Georgia. Basically ran across the
100 yard range at about the 80 yard mark. 55gr Federal, impacted
her spine just forward of his hips. Follow-up shot to the head from
    80 yards ended the suffering.

Game Warden stated the first shot destroyed the spine.

That is my only experience with deer and .223 Rem
A well placed shot, with hollow point ammo, would
get the job done if you needed to. I would not recommend
it even if legal. Especially not from a 10" barrel

why on earth would someone want to hunt deer with a SBR in 5.56? while SBR's might look cool and have satisfactory performance in CQB environment it would suck using it to hunt deer or most any medium sized game animal. if your thinking about hunting deer i wouldn't recommend anything less than a 30-30.
