Wife went out to the store to buy scallops for dinner tonight

    I told her she'd have a better chance of finding 223 ammo, this being New Year's eve already.

    Regional... They are everywhere here... Admittedly nowhere near the same quality you have, but for being 300 miles from the Gulf of Mexico we do what we can!

    Is there some reason to make a run on Scallops for new years eve? I've never heard of it.

    I have some buddies who drag and dive for scallops and usually I get a few jugs full this time of year when I'm home. I can eat them, but would much rather have a halibut to slice up and put on the grill.

    Don't think I'd want to try warm water scallops, but I sure love the big shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico instead of the little ones we get in Maine.:eat:

    When I was a kid I worked in a scallop processing plant. Someone discovered that if hit by steam the scallop would open and then it was bounced down a stainless plate with holes in it to dislodge the scallop from the shell. Then sandpaper covered rollers alternated directions to sort of pull the parts you don't want to eat off the part you do want to. It certainly was faster than shucking them by hand.

    That said best of luck in her quest to find some scallops.

    My father has a friend and they skin dive for scallops together. The friend cleans his scallops with a wet/dry vacuum. Apparently there is just enough suction to remove the good meat part and the bad part remains stuck to the shell. All the good meat is collected in the vacuum.

    It is tradition, you wrap them in bacon, and then broil :)

    He's got it wrong, I do the same thing the meat stays in the shell the guts are sucked out, works like a charm

    I stopped by Costco to get a few things and saw the seafood road show there. Picked up some scallops and salmon for dinner tonight with a spinach salad.

    My wife is working at the hospital tonight, but tomorrow it's smoked salmon and good cheese and other nice treats for lunch.
