Might I suggest a scope? Tail, front leg couple times then hits that matter. But still IMO a bit low.
I shoot raccoons with .22. Head shots are about it. See eyes, shoot eyes. (?They are moving but it's in head)

I have a skunk hanging around now. The dog got a light spraying, wife saw it once. If I see so much as a hair of it, the 17 HMR will be ready.

Ole racketycoons are charming little buggers, but they're too smart, can get themselves into laces they shouldnt, can cause damage well beyond their weight, plus they're a rabies reservoir and vector.
Ive got a small bunch of backyard chickens that eat bugs and ticks and such. Coons killed 10 of them before i could get traps in hand and "cure" the infection. I only got two but i know their were more. They stay in the marsh and feed in the creeks and ditches they can stay. Otherwise, traps, the dogs, air rifle, or powder burning.
