Why would Target ask to scan my drivers license?

My wife and I stopped by a Super Target department store over the weekend. We just needed a few groceries, and it was on our way home, so what the heck, I haven't been there for eons anyway.

I stopped by the refrigerated section to pick up a case of some refreshing carbonated adult beverage, she grabbed a few things for lunch through the week and we headed to checkout.

As the started to price scan the beer, the asked for my drivers license. No problem. I flashed it, showed her the date and picture, and started to put it away.

But wait! No, she didn't just want to see it, she wanted to slide it through the card reader. I put the beer back.

Why do the need to scan my drivers license? It seems a little creepy to me.

    I usually do.

So why do they want my DL info?

They'll sell your ass to a long list of telemarketers.

So the machine can verify you're 21 instead of trusting the teller to do it.

I thought about that, but I would think they could get that from my debit card.

So they have a record of who bought each alcoholic beverage they sold. Pretty well covers their butt as far as underage goes.

So when I asked, why wouldn't they just tell me that?
(Not that I would believe her anyway…)

Often when I would go to bars a few years back, they would scan my license as well. I believe it verifies that it's a real ID and not a fake. Whatever the reason is, it's probably store policy, and I don't blame them. Blame the government for making alcoholic beverages ridiculously regulated.

Just about all of the new ID's have a magnetic strip that the register can input the DOB from on age restriced items.

I remember decades ago bars putting your DL through a UV light...basically the same thing. And 1000% on the bold part. HH

They did the same thing to me when I returned something the other day. They scanned the barcode on the back of my license. I am also assuming they did it to you because of your beer so they can cover their rear.

Raise your hands everyone who first tried an alcoholic beverage at the age of 21 or older.

This begs the question, what information can they access from scanning my license?

I'm pretty sure it's just to prove it's a valid state ID. Many kids can pull off a fake id but can they make one with the magnetic strip that's legit? I doubt it.

when i was a doorman at a high end club we did this with a little hand held device...green light you were ok and red you didnt make it thru the door ..

it was for three main reasons

    1. just incase the ID was altered in appearance...
    2. so people couldnt let thier underage friends in to drink.
    3. i was told the DL photo was saved,in that way if somethig ever bad went down we could look up the DL photo to compare to the security cameras.we never had to use thisoption thank goodness but it does seem like a very usefull crimefighting tool.
