On all news websites there's always the "5 things" that we either learned or need to know about whatever they're covering. Why not 4 or 7 or 21? Or someone just established 5 as a limit for our comprehension of the issue? Just curious.

Short enough to grab your attention and recollection,

Not so short where it seems ridiculous.

The sites trend to, usually have a list of 8-10 things.

Five fingers on one hand? A number we're already comfortable and familiar with when it comes to counting? Maybe it's some unconscious thing where if you put things in terms of a list of five (or 3) then it is more easily understood? Five because we have five fingers. Three because we're used to seeing a 1st 2nd 3rd place?

I'm just speculating. Who knows why people do what people do?

Most people are able to remember a list between 5-9 items long.

Besides, the writers of these lists run out of stuff after 5. You ever read some of these lists? They are usually something like this (this example is for maintaining a car)

    1) Change your oil (no ####)
    2) Check for leaks (really???)
    3) Service your transmission and cooling systems (Ok, this is actually a good one)
    4) Keep your tires inflated (nah, I thought flat tires were better)
    5) Get any unususal noises checked out (but I thought the alternator was SUPPOSED to sing "Layla")

Curly said there was only one thing. You need to find out your one thing.

His brother said there were two things: Your one thing. . . AND GOLD!

Humans usually are able to distinguish seven "things" in their mind. Beyond that it becomes "many".

Television has probably reduced most people to only five things now.

Because the French use the 4 things they should know.

The Greeks use the 7 things they should know.

Most people cant count to 21.

Would you rather be like the French or the Greeks?

Similar reason many communications professional say that a speech should have no more than 5 main points and many advertising tag lines are no more than 7 words (Coke: It's the real thing). It's way our brains are wired.

One news outlet did it and since the amount of originality in the entire new/entertainment industry would fit in the cavity of a .22 short hollowpoint everyone else is slavishly following the fad.
