I think they use them to translate Japanese stuff to English, and vice versa.

The F.B.I. maintains offices in many if not most foreign countries around the globe. The offices are used to investigate groups and individuals that enter the United States and engage in criminal acts.

Likewise, when U.S. citizens go to foreign countries to further their crimes, the offices would relay whatever assistance they can to help the local authorities.

This is to say nothing of simply providing expert assistance in investigating local crimes, (such as the assistance to Aruba in the Natalee Holloway disappearance case).

I hope this helps you understand the need for foreign language experts.

As a final though, sometimes foreign language people engaging in criminal activity communicate in their native tongue requiring that the conversations be translated.

Organized crime is organized, and the world is a much smaller place than it used to be?

So they have an office in Japan? I wasnt so much questioning the need as I was cureous about what they do and where they work specifically.

Ive been planning to learn Japanese for a while and just noticed on their site that it was a language of interest for them.

After reading your post, I checked the official F.B.I. website.

The F.B.I. list offices in 75 cities around the globe, (many in countries that I can not begin to spell).

B.T.W. in Bureauese, the offices are known as "Legat's" short for Legal Attache'.

To directly answer your question, Tokyo Japan is on the list of Legat's.

They use them to interpret subtitles on Japanese porn. Otherwise, they'd have all these DVDs in their desk drawers that say Boo Kock Ay. :whistling:

Japanese is not an easy language to just "pick up" and be fluent in. It is probably one of the hardest languages for a non-native speaker to learn. My suggestion is that if you are looking for an easy way into the FBI, choose a different path. There are plenty of people out there that have a level of Japanese fluency already that the FBI can pick from.

The FBI has agents stationed in various embassies as "legal attaches" which work with local LE and assist in investigations which span the two countries. For Japanese, it would be easily the Yakuza and other international crimes including smuggling of electronics and guns.

Maybe they should send some agents to train the Japanese businesses though so they can write better instruction manuals and public notices? If I have to figure out what the heck the manual means when it says:

"For great ease of using the item replace battery power use, it is helpful first place short end into face down then pull gentle up motion in one hand so not to break mounting tabs and cause much sadness and dishonor to family for three generation".

WTF? I just want to use my remote for the damn TV!

Check this out to see how we can help them:
